hi, after many years of chronic constipation I’m just wondering if it’s possible for it to just disappear?
My daughter is now 10 years old has always been incredibly reluctant to take the laxatives prescribed! But we have now got to a stage where the soiling has gone and she takes herself off twice a week to do a massive poop! They are huge can cause discomfort even make her bottom bleed at times. Am I just being stupid? I always thought if the child was impacted they would soil?!
Soiling isn't always a sign of impaction. However going twice a week, pain and blood is definitely not good.
exactly!! We seem to have just been left until our referral to Great Ormond Street comes through! Her tummy constantly looks swollen the poops are toilet blockers! I thought the soiling was bad but this is horrible!!

This is where I have to talk inconvenient truths:
She's still constipated if she's not doing a daily dooey, with little or no strain. And if she was "reluctant to take" - as in given the choice to refuse - the laxatives, it's no wonder she's in the state she's in. In my day (and I'm in my 40s) the adults around her would have "forcibly" given her an enema after three days - and for all the shouting-screaming high-drama that would have been better for her in the long run.
she actually isn’t given a choice, she has major behavioural problems. Thanks for your advice though!
Dear Kerrylouise83 , from the symptoms you describe; pooing only two times a week, and producing really large poos, it sounds as though your daughter is indeed constipated. Have a look at the first part of this webinar recording which will help to explain what's happening: eric.org.uk/helpline/ Not all constipated children experience soiling, and often you can poo every day and still be constipated. However, as you will see in the Advice Sheet here eric.org.uk/advice-for-chil... pooing less than 4 times a week, or more than 3 times a day is a sign that there is a poo traffic jam. If you feel unsure, you could complete a Poo Diary (link is on the Advice Sheet) We would recommend completing a disimpaction with a macrogol laxative, in accordance with NICE Guidelines: eric.org.uk/childrens-bowel... eric.org.uk/how-to-use-macr... Make sure your daughter is drinking 6-8 cups of water or squash a day, spread evenly throughout the day, to help keep her bowel healthy. Don't include the laxatives as part of this fluid intake, because macrogols aren't absorbed into the body, they stay in the bowel until they soak into the poo, making it nice and soft and easy to pass. It may take a while to clear the backlog. Once you've cleared it, keep her on a daily maintenance dose. ERIC
Maybe more exercise and put the laxative in everything she eats. Then she's no choice. My girls have a lot of fibre and prunes if you can disguise prune juice or put it in cake, something she eats. Get more active, walk about rather than car. She won't be able to stop herself from going forever. She's ok to have senocot 2xs a day. Wish could offer more help.
