Holding on and muscle training

Newbie to bladder training (hoping for an appointment soon but in the meantime searching internet): As I understand it, it's all about learning how to hold on - to stretch the bladder and train the muscle by holding on.

Once or twice a day, he doesn't need to pee at the voiding interval, should we extend 5-10 minutes until he feels an urge to pee so that we don't waste an opportunity to practice holding on and stretching? (just like you don't waste a contraction) Or is it more important to "train" by sticking to the schedule and increasing the interval for the whole day/week.

Or am I simply overthinking this while doing the laundry...

Hi, I think it may depend on your child's issues, for example my son gets a very strong urge to wee, so the bladder training is to slowly stretch and strengthen the bladder, but also to get that really strong urge to chill out and not get chance to come along in the hope that it stops being so strong by getting out of that habit (hope that makes sense), so for us sticking to the set times is the right thing to do. However, if you're just working on stretching the bladder and increasing capacity, then I think it would be good to hold on for those 5 mins, perhaps not push it too much, but it's definitely one of the techniques initially suggested to us whilst we were working out my sons specific issues, he was told when he needed to wee to try and hold on for 1 minute and then build up that time gradually so he could learn to hold it for longer. I think it's a bit of working out what's right for your child and also some trial and error, it's okay to try it and if it doesn't help go back to what works best. P.S. I over think it all too! Best wishes 🦋
