My 41/2 year old refuses to do a poo on the toilet and will hold it until she cant hold any longer. Normally a poo will happen overnight. We have what is like seeping poo come out in her knickers and sometimes more. she will just sit at school and poo her knickers. she is desperate to go and then once on the toilet it all stops.

How do you know that she’s holding it in? Does she really not like going to the actual toilet? Afraid I can’t help, only asking because as per my post today, my 5 year old poos in his pants, but we don’t have any sense that he’s holding it in. Rather that he doesn’t bother to hold it in! As he’s not afraid of the toilet or anything. Will sit there messing around quite happily, just poo in his pants 10 mins later etc. So wondered how you know she’s holding, as opposed to just letting go/not aware that it’s about to come. Has she been able to tell you?

Sorry no, I’ve no experience of Movicol yet, only about to try it with my 5-year old in a week or few. (I have been asking for a referral to a specialist for several months but here the continence team (apparently only one nurse)! won’t take referrals until kids are 7. I’m hoping our GP might raise a referral to a general paediatrician if Movicol has no effect - but if 2 weeks of it has no effect perhaps we’ll have to try a full disimpaction too though. Although I’m not even sure he is constipated).

I’m glad to hear that you are under a paediatric gastro expert consultant, if soiling has been a problem for you for a while I imagine it may have been a struggle for you to get see an expert too. Sorry that Movicol isn’t working for you at the moment. I presume you’ve already been on different doses/schedules. I hope that a different approach and/or even a break from Movicol might help and that you can get an expert review asap. But, I think you know far more than I do about soiling in general as well as your own specific issues. Best wishes for things getting better for you soon.
