My 6 year old son is on Movicol due to soiling and not being aware of it everytime we think we have got somewhere and no accidents for a week it starts up again. It’s affecting school being sent home and not allowed back for 48 hours even though not contagious can’t risk it 😡

Today he has had 1 accident first thing this morning and been twice on toilet very soft. One at lunch time and one this evening. He has Movicol every 4 days as advised by doctors. I was doing last month a teaspoon a day with no accidents for a month then started up again so they changed my dosage to one every four days as they said teaspoon isn’t enough to work. Just wondering why had loose stools today. Also at weekend he had 4 accidents all messy so probably loose then I wasn’t there to see.

Last Movicol was on Sunday evening next due a sachet on Thursday evening

Hi there

I’ve been through a similar situation with my daughter who is now 7 and we’ve had her on no medication for over a month and fingers crossed things seem to be going well!

The breakthrough for us was establishing a toilet routine and making sure my daughter went to the toilet after breakfast and dinner and sat on the toilet for 5-10mins. She has been withholding/soiling for so long that her bowel had got stretched and she wasn’t getting the normal signals from her body to say that she needed to do a poo hence the soiling

The Eric website gives good advice for setting up a toilet routine. Also if your son has forgotten how to push a poo out or doesn’t get the signal to do it then sometimes getting him to sit with a party blower or blow up a balloon on the toilet helps to get things going

Even though we are not on any medication I still continue with the toilet routine we have been doing it for a year and a half! It’s really helped to minimise the soiling accidents and stopped her soiling her pants in school as she would mostly do a poo in the morning before school after breakfast

I’ve put a couple of posts on my page of the things we have done to improve the soiling situation - appreciate it might not work for every child but if it helps can only be a good thing

Good luck x

Thank you. A toilet routine sounds a good idea and not something we have ever done we will find this hard as he goes to breakfast club at school but I’ll encourage it at home.

This week is half term so I have been able to monitor him closely being off work myself, he has had 1-2 accidents a day they are messy very soft and watery and very smelly. I am now thinking this is a sign he’s blocked and the movicol of every 4 days is not enough. Of which he has only half a packet.

I’m thinking to check how he is tomorrow now he has had the movicol this afternoon and either book a drs appointment to see what they suggest or just trying movicol every three days maybe on half a packet I’ve been writing a toilet diary to see any patterns also he’s due back at school Monday so really need to make these accidents go as they won’t be happy and send him home from school for 48 hours 😡

Doctors aren’t really helping they say different things try different methods each time. I thought I sussed it last month doing a teaspoon every other day but they really wasn’t happy with that saying a teaspoon won’t do anything but we had a session of no accidents for a month. 😩
