Son has been prescribed movicol but he refuses to take it due to taste. The alarm we were given just falls off. We have an appointment in a month but son "can't remember" if he has done a poo during the day - it is so frustrating as we are constantly changing bed sheets. Hubby wants to return to nappies but I can't see how this would help.

Movicol refusal
Hi, my daughter is on Movicol and refused to drink it so we mix the dose with the required amount of water then we top it up with milk and she drinks it all, you can also add some juice if that’s his preferred drink. Remember though that he needs to drink water throughout the day as this makes a huge difference. Putting him back into nappies May undo all the toilet training efforts and although it may help with the frustrations everyone feels and be a quick fix I personally wouldn’t do it.
We purchased a family toilet seat which has made a massive difference to using the toilet.
It’s incredibly frustrating but it’s important to be consistent and make him understand the importance of drinking his medication, rewards/encouragement and praise will help develop confidence .
This is working (so far) for my daughter. How old is your son?
When times got bad, I used to mix it with lemonade and my daughter couldn’t drink it fast enough!!
Just mix it in first with a little lemonade and then top it up with the rest as the powder clumps and takes the fiz away at the beginning.
Can you actually mix it with lemonade? I wasn't sure if it would work still woth fizzy drinks? Also eldest has wanted to have it with a cup of tea but was unsure if it would work with hot drinks also. 6 year old daughter is a nightmare with taking it xx
My son only will take a Movicol in a milkshake. Mix it up with a bit of water so its fully dissolved add to milk and nesquick! I know it’s sugar but it’s more important that he has his medication every day. It tastes horrible in juice, particularly one with sweetners so I don’t blame kids for refusing to drink it!
I imagine the alarm is for night time wetness? Have you tried clipping the alarm onto pants and putting pull ups over the top? Means there is only pants to wash every night and not sheets. I bought my alarm off amazon for around £20 if you were looking for an alternative? - has an excellent clip and we had fantastic results in the end.
Good luck and stay strong, things will improve x
I think initially we used to add milk to it (such a long time ago now), but luckily as he got a bit older my son just drinks it. A friend of mine mixed it into yoghurt though.
I would personally not go back into nappies as I think it might confuse matters, its so hard changing/washing all the clothes and sheets but it's worth remembering you aren't on your own and it will improve.
Good luck
Please add 63mls water to each sachet of any Paediatric Macrogol (Movicol, Laxido or Cosmocol) before adding any juice, squash, milk, tea, lemonade etc. .
the medication binds with the water to hydrate/ moisturise the stool causing it to soften and stimulate the walls of the bowel. I found the leaflet on the ERIC website "how to prepare a Macrogol laxative " really helpful and found it didn't work well when not mixed properly
