Emily had an imperforate anus at birth to and had the necessary surgery and we are now on potty training! I'm looking for anyone in a similar situation with any pointers. We are only 3 hours in.

Hi Sarahemily,

I've only recently joined this forum so have only just seen your post. I know it's 6 months on but I was wondering how things are going for you?

Our son was born with an imperforate anus in Sept 2014. He's had all the relevant surgeries and procedures and we've been toilet training since Easter 2017, so a year now. It's been a hard slog to be honest. He gets constipated easily which causes soiling issues so we now have him on one sachet of Movicol a day. It's a constant balancing act as it's very easy to overdo it which then makes his poo too soft. After a recent consultation with his doctor we've started giving him 5ml of Senna liquid each evening and this seems to be helping. He never tells us when he wants to go but we're trying to encourage him to sit on the potty or toilet within the first half hour of getting up in a morning. He's always pretty reluctant and takes a lot of persuasion (sometimes in the form of iPad time!), but when he does comply he usually manages to go. This often means that he's clean for the rest of the day, or at least until after nursery. It's all progress!

Yesterday was the first time I've come across other families with a child born with the same condition as my son. Although I wouldn't wish it on anyone else it's good to have contact with others in a similar position.

Jx
