Smells of urine during the day

My 8 yr old son wets at night but also smells of urine during the day as if he didn't quite make it. Is there a way of encouraging him to go to the toilet sooner?

Have you tried vibrating watch? I have same problem in that my daughter doesn't seem to notice if just a little leaks out and it was the smell that alerted me to it. She seemed to be OK at school but there she is in routine that she always goes break times and lunchtimes plus teachers know the challenges and will let her go if she says she needs it in class. Most of the problems seemed to be at home so we're trying vibrating watch at the moment, set at 2 hour intervals. She still has accidents when she doesn't quite make it but because she's checking every two hours, and changing if she's a little damp, we don't seem to have the same issue with smell for now.
