advice needed

I had my laparoscopy in July 2024 and was told no endometriosis was found. I still believed that this diagnosis was wrong and 11 weeks later phoned up for my biopsy results. The histology came back positive for endometriosis on my left sidewall! I have had to beg for an appointment to discuss this with a gynaecologist but am after some advice before this. Is it possible that more endo was missed as the surgeon didn’t diagnose it by eye? Is it worth going to a specialist to see if they can find more and remove it as my pain is in my right side? It was purely just luck that she took a biopsy which confirmed it in my left.

Unfortunately a lot of endometriosis is missed on scans, partly because it can be obscured by your organs but also because the radiologist might not have much training in how to spot it. As you say, it’s good the biopsy picked it up.

I would ask to be referred to a BSGE accredited endometriosis centre so that you know you are being seen by a specialist rather than a general gynaecologist who may not know much about endo. Look at the BSGE website to see if there is one near you or if not if you’re prepared to travel to the nearest. Bear in mind some only do private practice.

thankyou for your reply! It was a general gynae that performed my surgery so do you think it’s possible she missed anything during the actual laparoscopy?

Hi there. Sorry, I’ve no idea why I focused on scans and not surgery in my reply. I’m putting it down to the brain fog I’m getting with my new medication for the pain 😂.

Yes, it’s also possible that a general gynae could miss it during a laparoscopy although less likely to be missed than during an ultrasound. Really depends how hard they look and how much they understand about how far it can spread.
