Hi,

I’m just wondering if anyone has had any success requesting copies of ultrasound scans/MRI scans from their NHS hospitals? And if so, how do I go about getting these?

I’m looking into private consult/treatment, will a private doc accept previous scans or would they want to carry out their own? I’ve never met with/had any experience with private healthcare and to be honest, can’t really afford it but I am now desperate.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

These reports have to be requested from the trusts and should be obtainable under the freedom of information act.

Contact the hospital/department where the US was carried out, they’ll likely advise of the applicable email to send your request to.

Include your nhs number and as much info - dates/department etc as possible.

My last request like this took 2 weeks, but I’d guess timeframes varies around the country.

I went private for surgery during Covid. I requested copies of an mri I had on nhs and an ultrasound report I’d had from a (different) private hospital and forwarded them to the private consultant. I didn’t have any further imaging done as the scans had been quite recent.

There was info on the hospital website as to how to request the mri. I also had the reports that had been sent to my gp.

Good luck

Hi

I just asked my GP reception and they gave me, it just took 10 minutes. But for MRI I asked the the specialist doctor from Gynaecology who referred me, because the results go back to the person who referred you. I got all my results. Hope this helps

hun am still waiting on mine hun I had mri last September. In the end I had to email disclosure which is part of information governance and they are working to obtain the information for me. Xx

I did ask gp but as the gynecologist specialist requested it went back to him. But as I phoned and phoned the his secretary I gave up as she said she wasn’t allowed to tell me the results. I explained I have severe anxiety and she didn’t so that’s why I gave up and then phoned various other department s to hopefully 🤞 obtain it. As I thought this is my right to have the information under freedom of rights act . Xx I used to work for the nhs so I had to know different things . Xx

I have submitted an official subject access request for all of my information. So they have a month to return the information requested, I struggle to get honestly anything out of them so I’m not holding my breath 😔

If you’ve done the formal subject access request which it sounds like you have. Then if they don’t reply in the month and given no update you can complain to the information commissioners office (ICO) which is a government department and they will get your records for you.

As to private treatment the first step is often a transvaginal ultrasound with a specialist trained at spotting endo. There is a clinic in London that has several people trained there but there are people around the country. Costs do vary but around £300 and would be a great first step to know more of your endo situation now and know where to head next.

Thank you so much for your reply! And the detail re. ICO. I suspect that will come in handy!

I just had an ultrasound and MRI, which have just highlighted what looks to be Adenomyosis and Deep infiltrated Endometriosis, fixed uterus with bowel involvement. I was just hoping to recover those scans to take to the private specialist rather than paying for them again when they’ve literally just been done (MRI end of Jan) ultrasound (November).

I’m at my whits end with it all. For three years my GP scanned me over and over telling me there was nothing wrong. When I finally get a hospital referral they tell me it’s ovulation/IBS fobbing me off for a further 4 years. I’m not even certain I can’t make private work financially, but a further 3 month wait for an initial consult at the specialist centre and then a 40 week wait for surgery is just absolutely soul destroying at this point.

Yes unfortunately the waits are really long right now. And yes it sounds like you’ve had good scans now that have seen endo. Unfortunately general gynae scans aren’t good enough to see endo. I’ll drop you a message with a few more resources as private care for severe endo will be really really expensive like tens of thousands of pounds 😪
