Referral rejected

Hi all, Usually under Cwm taf university health board but was referred to the Heath hospital in Cardiff as my case was too complex. Yesterday I found out that my referral was rejected due to them no longer taking on complex cases?

Has anyone had the same thing happen? If so do you have next steps as the secretary was none the wiser until today. Thanks!

Hi Davies, I don’t have experience of this exactly, but I have done my fair share of fighting to get my medical needs met. I’d go back to the hospital board and ask them what they recommend you do next. I’d also ask your GP to refer you somewhere else. It’s better to have two plans than one x

Hi Graceface,My GP won't refer me elsewhere as I'm already under the care of the hospital. I was referred to a different gynaecologist however I was discharged as I'm already under the care of one. They have been great but they're now in the process of trying to figure out what's going on themselves as they don't know why the hospital I need to be referred to is now rejecting referrals.

I'm already looking to go private as i can't wait much longer. They have said time is on my side with regards to IVF as I'm only 32 but by the time I get the appointment and have the surgery I'll be late thirties with the waiting lists the way they are x

Not exactly the same. I'm under Aneurin Bevan in Newport/Monmouthshire area. I had an emergency ultrasound which identified abnormalities in my right ovary. My GP requested an urgent gynae appointment, but the hospital rejected this and said I could have a routine follow up scan in 12 months. No need for gynae.

I've gone private with Dr Anthony Griffiths who also covers Cardiff (Spire). Had an appointment within a week and another ultrasound with a endo specialist two weeks later. His laprascopy waitlist is six weeks.

Its pricey and I'm annoyed this has been the only realistic option for me. But like yourself I'd be late 30s by the time I have surgery if I go with NHS. The pain is too severe to wait three years and I'm concerned how compromised my organs would be by then.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you! It's Anthony Griffith's I believe I was being referred to. I've looked into spire with Dr Richard Penketh and he seems lovely. The wait for surgery with him would be march but that's due to needing colerectal surgeons involved too and they're backed up but at least it's better than waiting years! I've actually contemplated selling my car in order to afford the £8-10k price tag. I hope you get it sorted soonx.

Oh gosh I hope you can get it sorted without having to do that. Sorry you're having such a tough time. My interactions with Dr Griffiths have been great so far though, so hopefully that will put your mind at ease a bit if you do end up being referred to him x

I am wondering if you were referred to the Heath Hospital as a specialist BSGE centre - hospitals are required to refer on patients with severe endometriosis who meet certain criteria. Basically diagnosed or suspected deep endo involving the bladder, bowel or ureter. (You can find this online in the NICE guidelines for endometriosis).

There is a list at BSGE.org.uk of approved hospitals. The Heath Hospital may have lost its accreditation although it is still showing on the online list. That may be why they can’t see you. I think the next nearest one might be the Grange Endometriosis Centre at the Royal Gwent Hospital. The Cardiff Spire Hospital is also accredited but as you know it is private.

Talk to your GP or gynaecologist about this. If this is why you were referred, then you should be referred on to another BSGE centre.

Hope this is of some help.

Yeah I do have DIE Recto-vaginal endometriosis and adenomyosis so was referred there due my consultant not being able to perform the surgery needed. I didn't think the heath would lose its accreditation!

My case has now been sent to the MDT so I'm awaiting the decision from them, probably won't find out until November/December and then the waiting begins. But I will Ask about referral to the Grange as I've recently heard they're now BSGE. See where I go next month

Thank you 😊
