Adenomyosis, endometriosis and copper coil or IUD

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to ask if anyone knows if you can have an copper coil inserted with a history of adenomyosis and endometriosis? I've read it can make both worse. I'm frightened as I had sex on Saturday but the condom fully broke!. I'm taking Norethisterone 5mg twice daily for the last 10 days but I know this does not necessarily stop pregnancy. I did take levonelle as emergency contraception on Sunday but I honestly don't know if It will work as I don't know where I am in my cycle and when I was due to ovulate (meds have messed my cycle). So I was thinking maybe I should get the copper coil to be safe as I'm really anxious about getting pregnant.

I have Endo & Adeno & I also have the Mirena. It did take 4months to settle down but it works!

I get cyclicle headaches, spotting etc but the side effects are nowhere near as bad as the Endo pain & bleeding so I recommend it.

Hi, I had the copper coil a few years ago, and it didn't make anything better or worse as there are no hormones in it , but was extremely painful to have fitted. They will probably try and convince you to have the mirena coil instead, as this can help both endo and adenomyosis, but ultimately its your decision

I have endo and adeno, I had the copper coil for a few years and honestly, I can say it made everything worse. Pains, heavier bleeding etc. only thing it helped with is not causing headaches like other contraceptives. I’d never recommend the copper coil to someone with endo or adeno honestly.

I’ve been told multiple times to try the mirena but it’s scary. I had such an ordeal with the copper coil slipping out of place on two different ones. (In total had 2 coils but only for a couple of years each).

Now I’m TTC and am thinking once I am finally done, I’ll likely get the mirena because I believe it can really help reduce symptoms.

Hi there,

After my first surgery it was recommend I have the mirena coil. It was the worse decision of my life. It made me feel depressed, low and my period continued to be painful.

There are other alternatives that can help with endo and adeno.

I have adenomyosis and endometriosis. I've never had a copper coil, but I do have a Mirena, and so far it's the one thing that has has the biggest positive impact on my quality of life as it stopped my periods, so no more heavy bleeding for over a month at a time. It is agony for me to have them removed and fitted (I'm on my third now) as it's like an extreme version of the painful sex that comes with endo for many of us, but for me, the short term pain is worth the benefit.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience. Much appreciated. I decided not to go with the coil and try levonelle instead. My gyanecologist has suggested to try depo provera injections for the bleeding so fingers crossed it does something. Hope your all okay today x
