Endometriosis and coil contraception

Hi, so I’ve been diagnosed with endometriosis and suffer quite badly with cramps and often can end with being sick because of them I raised these issues with my nurse and she put me on injection contraception hoping it would be better than the pill but it’s still hasn’t helped so now she’s told me I should go on the Merena coil and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this contraception, does it work? Does it ease the pain? I’m just worried if I have it it’s for six years.

the great thing about the coil is you can have it removed at any point so if it isn’t working for you after a certain amount of time you can change your mind and get it taken out.

My doctor is recommending it for adenomyosis and endometriosis control. I’m to have it fitted at the same time as my endo surgery and cyst removal. Ideally I was against the coil as it can sometimes cause worse bleeding.

If you’re in a lot of pain have you tried stronger nsaids? Diclofenic seems to help the cramps a bit more for me. Still get chronic pain at times but this takes the edge off more.

Also if bleeding loads have they not talked about norethisterone? xx

Hi thank you,

This is really helpful advice and no when I say I’m pain unfortunately one of the doctors said that this is a normal part of endometriosis and not alot they can do, hopefully when I next speak to the nurse I’ll talk about pain medication. Also I haven’t heard of norethisterone before but I’ll certainly talk to my nurse about it as it looks good and may help my symptoms thank you very much and good luck with your surgery. Xx

Hi I was diagnosed with severe Endo and the mirena coil was just fantastic for me. I'd tried various laps with laser, decapeptyl injections, the pill, the bar to mention a few but none of these treatments really had anywhere near the same impact on me. I know I'm lucky that the coil has suited me, I'm now on my 3rd one. I find they start to fade after 4 years but as soon as a new one is in and settled I don't know myself. I wish you all the best with it. I recently spoke with a gynae and she said that if someone presents to her with endo symptoms she will treat them for it. In her opinion a lap is invasive and causes more scar tissue so she is reluctant to do that unless v necessary. Hope this helps
