I’m 1.5years post my first laparoscopy and diagnosis, and currently on the depo shot.
Unfortunately I’m having symptoms again and wondering if I can, and how I go about being referred to an endo specialist rather than a general gynae consultant like I was last time (Not a great experience at all). We don’t have any local specialist so would probably have to travel 2/3hrs to get to one in either Manchester or Newcastle.
I have a lot of bowel related issues which did improve after my surgery where they removed endo from ‘the back of the womb’ but I’m concerned it could be in my bowel too and just not seen.
Is it best to pay for a private consultation or can you request a specialist?
Thanks for any advice.

I’ve heard you can ask to be referred to a specific hospital but I honestly don’t know if you can get named referrals on the NHS, maybe someone else can give information on this.
My surgery was in London even though I live in Manchester but that’s because I found a private consultant through Bupa who works at an endo clinic there and there were loads of great reviews about his work. I also didn’t have any issues getting a private referral letter from my GP that mentioned this specific consultant.
Whether you go private or NHS really depends on if you can afford it or have medical insurance. For me the whole process took 4-5 weeks and I felt like I’d have to wait years just to get a consultation with an NHS gynaecologist. I’m glad I went down the route I did but I know it’s not something everyone can do. I hope this gets resolved for you and sorry to hear your pain has come back! That’s so unfortunate!
I’ve seen a few people say they’ve gone private for a specialist consultation and their consultant has then added them to their NHS list for further treatment, though I guess this depends on the consultants good will to offer that option. I couldn’t afford to do the whole thing private unfortunately.
Endo on the back of the womb might well involve deep rectovaginal endo which would immediately qualify you for referral to an endo centre. Do you have the discharge note or any other details from the lap to post? You can block out personal detail.
Unfortunately I have struggled to get any form of report from the hospital and so has my GP, I have chased it a few times and the only thing I have managed to get is a verbal ‘you had a small amount we removed from back of the womb’ which I see to be very poor hence me wanting to see a specialist. My consultant very reluctantly gave me the lap in the first point so I was very interested to see the details but no luck at all.
Thank you for your response and this info, it’s something I’ll ask about/ bring up when asking for a specialist!
You would be best to request a copy of the lap report by what is called a subject access request. They have to comply with that. If you would like to join a group called EndoRevisited there is a detailed file on how to do it. I'll message you the link.
