Hi, I have terrible nausea and sickness with my bowel endo. The doctors have prescribed me Metoclopramide and in the side effects it says changes in menstrual cycle…..I have only been taking 5mg when I need it however I’ve never seen any medication say that before which has slightly concerned me given how much pain I am already in.
Has anyone else had any experience with Metoclopramide? Yes I’ve tried all natural anti sickness but nothing working and it’s stopping me from eating which is dangerous as I am already a very low weight so hence the prescription.
Any thoughts welcome. Thank you xx

Have you considered what you are eating? GP suggested low Fodmap recently which I'm trying, this includes gluten free and lactose free milk. Some foods cause inflammation. I'm also trying to get a SIBO test on the NHS, it is available privately but does cost quite a bit. Probiotics can be good for nausea, does need to be a good quality one. I lost around 30kg because of all this so I do understand the difficulty you;re having.
Thanks but it’s not my diet I have a dietitian and my diet is as clean as it can get and I’ve been through loads of probiotics non of which helped so that’s not what’s causing it unfortunately…..wish it was something I had control over but it’s not. My surgery was due on the 18th but got cancelled last min due to the bowel surgeon having to isolate so I am devastated and just trying to cope at the moment. Thank you for replying it means a lot xx
Sorry surgery was cancelled, hopes get up with this to such a high point. I’m waiting further surgery with colorectal as no Gynae left, I was told I’d be put on the urgent list, then I found out last week I wasn’t and so upset. There is way too much disappointment that goes with this.
I had so many symptoms, it was over a year ago and only funnily enough getting a follow up call tomorrow 😒 because I had throat symptoms too I think they wanted to rule out cancers, I did it awake, the nurse was lovely stroking my head, on the way out she said to all the other staff “22 years I’ve been doing this and never seen anyone do so well, she’s a star” haha xx
It was a no for me at one hospital, Gastro didn’t believe in it or probiotics. Wasn’t much of a gastro when they aren’t bothered the patient is losing weight and in constant pain. I’ve switched hospital for colorectal Endo surgery and noticed the hospital does the breath testing so I’ve messaged the GP to change to there for Gastro and pain clinic.
Sorry for everything you are going through however if someone could reply regarding my actual post about the Metoclopramide that would be really helpful xx
Hi, I have tried metoclopramide in the past few months. I didn’t notice any difference when it came to my period but they made me feel very drowsy, so much so that I couldn’t take them any longer. I tried Domperidone and they worked great for me, although I don’t think they are for long term use.
My nausea was really bad during the summer but seemed to have disappeared out of no where. It is an awful feeling and I lost tons of weight because of it. Im a dietetic assistant and I noticed above that you seen a dietitian too, I’m sure they had told you just to stick to plain bland foods and eat little and often too if you can. Hope you feel better soon xx
Thank you!! I like the drowsy side as I don’t sleep much so any bit helps however on a tiny dose it doesn’t effect me badly only used it when I need it not every day.
Yes the dietitian has been good but they have been worried qnd put me on 3x fortisip a day which I can’t drink they just come straight back up and make me feel more sick. I try but they are not good with sickness. Tried the calogen shots too but with no gall bladder the high fat content made things worse. So it’s tricky but thank you for the advice xx
I use sea bands buy a few pairs from Amazon wear them half the day. They work on acupressure points and do not have any side effects. Been great for me might not work for everyone.
I'm on Metoclopramide too! I also have 5mg three times a day. It's been an absolute life saver and I haven't noticed any side effects at all. I couldn't eat either and have problems with being underweight. It's really helped me and I hope you go on ok with it. I've also tried to keep my diet as low fodmap as possible now for the past 4 years and that's a help as well. Good luck! xx
Thank you too glad to know from someone who takes it! That’s brilliant as it does help me and I have to force myself to eat anyway due to the bowel side of things I get scared due to all the pain so with the added sickness it was getting dangerous. J will stick with it 😊 my diet is totally clean but makes no difference to my symptoms. Thank you again xx
Actually in spite of my good diet, I still needed the Metoclopramide. My endometriosis has somehow caused me to develop a condition called Gastroparesis where you have delayed stomach emptying. I definitely need it three times a day. I hope it helps you because I am so grateful for this drug. I was in a dreadful state like you are.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon. It's horrible to be so sickly. xx
Hi, with regards to your question is this what you read in the information supplied with the medication, or from somewhere else? It is uncommon but Metoclopramide can cause increases in a hormone called prolactin with overtime (with regular use) may cause irregular or loss of period.
As stated you are taking 5mg when you need it so this side effect is very unlikely. Keep in touch with your Dr if you experience anything, but it sounds like this is required to keep up your food intake. I hope that helps, I am a pharmacist for reference.
Thank you so much that’s really helpful I just couldn’t understand how an anti sickness pill could affect the cycle. The side effects are written in the leaflet supplied with the medication I don’t usually read side effects but did this time and it just confused me. However I’m only on a low dose as you said so hopefully should be ok!! However stopping my periods would be a good thing so I don’t mind if that the side effect 😊. Thank you for your help that means q lot xx have a lovely day xx
I jave been on every anti sickness for over 30 years metocloprimide worked brilliant till they found out it reacted with another med I was on and caused a heart attack in April please check with your doctor if you are om any antidepressants or anti physcotics my body can't absorb anti emetics any longer so I've been told there's nothing so they can give me im now looking at natural remedies
