Mirena Coil

Hi everyone,

Please could you tell me about whether you would recommend the mirena coil from your experience with it?

I have stage 4 endometriosis spanning 16 years. I had 3 surgeries in 2 years, the third being a 7 hour long excision. They cleared it all apart from my diaphragm in 2019. It grew really aggressively and quickly in the space of a few months between those surgeries.

I gave birth to my baby girl who is now almost 11 months. As I’m breastfeeding I’ve only just had my first period a couple of weeks ago.

My surgeon would strongly like to fit me with a mirena coil, but I’m hesitant because of horror stories! I wanted to try going hormone free and see what happens but my surgeon advised that it’s too much of a risk because of how aggressive my endometriosis has been.

Please could you tell me how you’ve found it? I understand it’s something usually encouraged for endometriosis management. Thank you!

I had the copper coil after my son was born and it did absolutely nothing for me! I wanted to stay hormone free due to previous problems on the pill and other hormonal treatments. I had the mirena coil after my first lap and, touch wood, its been good for me - it stopped my period completely which meant (obviously!!) no bleeding every month which was a god send as it was awful!

For me, it worked really well in reliving some symptoms and so I would recommend (although I appreciate that others have a different experience). I also have adenomyosis (which was only recently diagnosed) and this is a suggested treatment for that as well. It turns out that the adeno has progressed a lot despite having the mirena, but it seems to have kept the symptoms in check for at least a couple of years before being diagnosed so Im grateful for that.

Good luck with whatever you choose x

Hi

I have had a mirena coil for years now .

I was the same initially, I was reluctant because nothing with hormones suited me previously.

I initially had copper coil to avoid hormones. I found the side effects with that to hard to cope with on top of issues already have.

I found the mirena pretty good for me. For me it’s not reduced the pain and or sickness I get but my bleeding has reduced … no more flooding or bleeding through my clothes

From what Iv read a lot of peoples periods stop altogether while have this coil

Hope this helps - any other questions let me know

I had a mirena coil fitted in my fifties, after years of monthly agony. I have not had children, so my experience was unremitting, except when I was on the pill. My husband and I -seriously - did not want children(!) so contraception was important to us. Yet, even after my husband had a vasectomy... I still had to go back on the pill as otherwise I was in agony for a week... every month. As the pill kept the endo at bay, no one else seemed willing to do anything, though I felt it wrong to be constantly taking hormones.I finally saw a leading gynae in late 40s (new relationship, some years after my husband's death) and he suggested a mirena coil. He also felt I needed to have coil inserted under anaesthetic, as I had a narrow cervix. I was completely out for the insertion, and didn't feel a thing, with just some mild discomfort for a day or two after. I then had 5+ pain free years, by the end of which time, my hormones had dropped , so the pains did not return after it was removed.

I wish I'd had the coil inserted much earlier, although I'm glad that seeing this particular gynae (privately) did result in an op with me under anaesthetic - from my general pain levels I imagine insertion would have been agony. Maybe as you have recently had a child it won't be so bad, but if you can have anaesthetic I would recommend it! Hope this helps, take care!
