My partner is experience back pain and the gynecologists' have suggested that it could be endometriosis. It seems like she will require surgery to remove the tissue. Has anyone else experienced the surgery, and can you tell me a bit more about your experience... Did the operation help with pregnancy?

Hello

Yes many of us have had the surgery it's called a laproscopracy with removal of endometriosis. Either by excision (cutting the effected tissue out) or diathermy (burning the effected tissue).

It can help with the symptoms of endometriosis, but it isn't a cure. The surgery must be done by a gynaecologist with a specialist interest in endometriosis. I for example had lower back pain, painful periods (in beds for days even on prescription pain killers) before the surgery. Post surgery all my symptoms eased alot and it was more manageable after time some of my symptoms started coming back so I decided to go onto hormonal contraceptives as it can help mask the symptoms. But obviously I'd your trying to get pregnant this isn't a good option for your partner.

As to if it can help with pregnancy it's hard for us to say.

If its just a question of, can it effect fertility then yes it can but not in all cases its quite case dependent. Mine for example isn't effected, many people have multiple children with endo, whilst others can't.

If it is more an question of your trying but not conceiving. Then yes removing it may help. If fertility is a concern ensure this is raised with the gynaecologists who is doing the procedure to ensure that they check these areas and treat it accordingly. But it may not be cause issues and surgery doesn't/can't always fix the issue.
