Laparoscopy and being overweight

Hi. I have my laparoscopy on the 13th January which I'm really anxious about. Has anyone had one being overweight? I've lost almost 2 stone but am still in just in the obese category slightly from the BMI chart. I'm just so scared it's putting me at extra risk :( Thank you.

Hi there. I can Inmagine your worry. I have the same worry. I gained quite a lot of weight due to depression, my kissing ovaries, hormone I balances and not being able to work out since endo is giving me sciatica. I'm sure I need a laparoscopy because these cysts aren't going to resolve on their own. I worry about my weight as well. I'm in that same category as you are. One gyno said ill be okay. But I want to lose weight before the lap. I just don't know how! I have to go onto birth control which will prob gain more weight! Are you in bc? Is there an option to quit them so it'll be easier to lose the weight? I wish I had a good answer for you here. But I think losing weight is always a good idea if it's possible. I think your at lesser risk then.

Ahh it’s so scary isn’t it. I’ve got Pcos too so weight loss is always a struggle but I’m very determined now! I’m going to be as healthy as possible the next few weeks and I’ve been exercising everyday too to try make recovery easier 🙏🏻 Good luck with yours too xx

Yes it's hard, depression makes it so much harder. Try to do things that make you happy as well. Even if it's just little things.

Yes I was supposed to lose weight and did then my surgery got postponed due to covid, I got depressed, my symptons worsened and didn't leave the house for ages and my weight went up massively. They did my in a main theatre at a hospital as opposed to private hospital on the NHS as they have weight restrictions. Risks are higher with overweight patients and it is much harder for the surgeon to get a decent look round inside and for the bowel to drop down into view. I was lucky - he described the view as moderate so I do feel my weight made his life difficult and not all of the endo could be removed.

You have lost weight already and your surgeon will know that and it will go in your favour. Keep going as every pound counts. You are doing well!

It does feel like a catch 22 when your symptoms affect your diet and going out but you need to lose weight for them to fix you. Its a tough circle to be in.

I am very obese and recovered fine. Went back to work after 2 weeks but felt sore for just under that. Still feeling a bit tired but thars improving every day. I only had my lap on the 4th December so not long ago.

Good luck x
