PCOS turn to endometriosis

Hi all.

Wondering if someone can shine some light on my confusion.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18/19 (29 now). I missed periods for 6+ months which was regular for me. Had my son 2 years ago and a miscarriage last year. Since I have not been able to conceive naturally so my GP sent me for an ultrasound.

The results of which some back less then 24 hours and my GP calls me and tells me I have endometriosis, a cyst and inflammation. He has referred me urgently and I have an appointment with the gynaecologist on Xmas eve. I’m baffled how a scan 12 months ago showed some PCOS following my miscarriage and now I have endometriosis.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Any insight will help. Confused and wanting another child.

X

HiScan results can depend on the experience of the user for endo. I think training will start to improve in the coming years. Mine didn’t show on any ultrasound scan.

That’s great your appointment has come through so quickly. I wrote notes before consultation and the endo UK site has some great tips for this.

Good luck 🙂

Sonographers in general gynaecology will usually have a background of radiography, midwifery or nursing and will mostly only be trained to look at the reproductive organs generally. Endo ovarian cysts show easily and can develop at any time so it doesn't mean it was missed a year ago.

Deep (severe) endo shows on ultrasound but it is a specialist skill that only advanced ultrasound experts have the training for. It isn't a case of improved training being needed but having the right expertise for the job in hand. If the scan has showed deep endo then you must be referred to a specialist endo centre in tertiary care. I would contact your GP and ask what has been found to ensure you have been referred to the right sort of expert gynaecologist.
