Hysterectomy 😥😢

Hello Ladies, Hope your all well. Just a quick question but is a hysterectomy the cure for Endometriosis. Or is is better to leave well alone. I've tried all meds to stop it and put me in medical menopause. Nothing has worked so I'm not on any medication for endo. 😢😥 ❤

I had a hysterectomy nearly 3 years ago, due to endometriosis. Prior to that I’d had 2 operations to remove endometriosis and ovarian cysts. I’ve never been on any medication for it apart from painkillers. I was advised to try Merina Coil as that is sometimes used to help endo sufferers but before I got it fitted I suffered a flare up that resulted in me getting my hysterectomy.

It was a last resort for me, I’d luckily managed to have 2 children after my endo had been removed previously. My consultant advised hysterectomy with retention of ovaries. If we’d wanted more kids I would have had a3rd laparoscopic op but he advised the endo would likely return and I would then still need a hysterectomy.

He told me that hysterectomy would not cure endo but removing womb and Fallopian tubes and cervix would help alleviate symptoms. And it really has. It was the best decision for me. No painful heavy periods- as no periods full stop!

I’d speak to your GP/consultant if you are in pain as you need to find the best course of action for you based on your own situation. Really hope you are ok and get the support you need xx

I had a hysterectomy 4 years ago due to endo and adenomyosis. I was 34 and had already had multiple surgeries for endo or complications of and tried every med going, so it felt like my last option. I kept my ovaries and tubes and although it didn’t cure my endo (sadly a small patch returned where my cervix used to be 2 years later), it has hugely improved my quality of life. I am no longer swollen or in constant pain and can live a normal life now. I was lucky enough to have had my miracle son and I wanted to be well enough for him. It’s a big decision and one that requires a lot of thought and research. As Claireyboots said, I would recommend going back to your Dr or maybe get a second opinion to understand what all of your options are before making a final decision, as no one should be left to live in pain. As far as I know, there is no cure, only symptom management. I've been on the pill for a couple of years now and that's really helped. I've gone from not being able to get out of bed with pain, to now only having occasional 'twinges'.

A hysterectomy isn't considered a cure. Because by definition endometriosis is outside of the womb so removing its unlikely to solve the issue. Some people do choose to have it as a last resort but even then some people don't get any/or only mild relief.

You've said that you've tried different medications, have you had excision surgery to remove the endometriosis?
