Hello ladies , I’ve started to take the cerelle contraceptive pill to stop my periods as the pain is unbearable and I’ve heard taking the pill can help regulate your body. However I’ve been taking it for 3 months now as first I had constant spotting for about 7 weeks then maybe a few days with nothing . And now the past month it’s constant bleeding heavier period paid constant swollen tummy just feeling rubbish all the time . Not sure what to do I want to stop taking it but I heard it can really help your body to fall pregnant in the future . Help ?!

Hi Sophiii,

Taking the contraceptive pill does not help your body fall pregnant in the future, but it can help ease the daily symptoms of endometriosis. It is a good option for managing symptoms if you are not trying to conceive.

Cerelle is widely know for causing intermittent spotting but if you are uncomfortable with this I would suggest asking your GP to try an alternative option.

I have provided a link below to an info sheet on the different hormonal treatments available:

Hi Sophiii,

I’m on the generic Desogestrel. I’ve been taking that for about 4 months. I did spot after the first month for about 14 days, then it stopped and started again for another 10-12 days or so. It was quite light spotting the second time around.

Since then I’ve spoken to my Nurse specialist and she recommended I double the dose to avoid the spotting. It took another month to settle but it’s been good for about 6/7 weeks, so fingers crossed it continues.

You may need a higher dose. I would recommend you speak to your consultant or nurse specialist.

All the best!

Hello thankyou for your message , yes it’s just non stop the bleeding so stressful especially when I have a husband too I can’t even have any intimate time with him because of the constant bleeding it’s to much . Going to give the nurse a call today and see what they suggest . Maybe they will do the same with me . Thankyou for your advice are be so happy once it settles lol x

I think you’ve been misadvised the pill does not regulate it only masks your problems bleeding not good if you want to stop stop 🛑 it won’t help pregnancy in the future .your body!do what it tells you !

Hi Sophiii

I can totally sympathise with you. I’m taking Desogestrel the mini pill with no break. I started in December and had 2 months with no spotting then when I did it was very light. For a few months after it’s been irregular but light. Not saying you’d be the same but it’s definitely helped me.

The pill is not a long term solution and yes it might calm things down temporarily but it won’t help you get pregnant in the future - you need to stop taking the pill for that.

If I was you I’d call your GP or nurse whoever you’ve been seeing and push for a better solution. I had to push my GP. I certainly don’t want to be on the pill as I too have a partner and we want to start a family but it’ll have to wait until I’m sorted which could be a couple years by the time I actually get a surgery date and recover from it etc.

I really hope you get what you need :) stay safe x
