Continuous pill - 4 day break?

Hi everyone

I’ve been on a low oestrogen pill for 5 packets now back to back without a break as advised by my doctor to try and make me bleed less and control my symptoms. Luckily I’ve been pretty lucky but last night I was 2 hours late in taking my pill and this morning I’ve got a proper period and such bad cramps. I remember my doctor telling me that if I bled enough to need sanitary products I was to take a 4 day break then go back on the pill - has anyone else experienced this and it’s worked? Not sure how long to expect my period for and when it’ll stop as haven’t had one in months
