I have been experiencing this too more noticeably since my laparoscopic surgery. For me, I have a particular area of external skin that can be itchy, tender, can turn red and become a bit swollen. It only becomes irritated during ovulation and again during my period, then during other times it is just tender and slightly puffy. I am a bit confused about what it could be since I've never experienced it before. I have a few theories: a side effect from hormonal medication, a change in hormones/ph levels which can cause yeast infections or bacterial issues around and during menstruation and/or a sensitivity to feminine hygiene products.
I've just started trying canestan cream to see if that helps. If it doesn't help then my issue might be a skin sensitivity issue to pads that I have all of a sudden developed?? Not sure yet.
I'm not sure yet with me, but maybe try a anti-fungal cream (for the exterior skin) to see if that helps. It is quite common for woman to have these issues during ovulation and periods.
I had this every month for about a year. It's what started me pursuing my doctors to find out what was going on gynaelogically and led me eventually to my endo diagnosis. It was thrush and was related to the change in hormones every month. A couple of rounds of canesten tablets and a reduction in sugar completely sorted it. I'd recommend getting your doctor to do a vaginal swab, I'd tried doing it myself with the thing from the supermarket and it came back negative, so not sure I'd trust that again.
