So I went into a&e yesterday due to increasing pain.
I saw the registrar and she questioned why I was going to Oxford which is like over an hour away from where I live for my treatment and I said it was just where I was referred to after my first lap she said that they have two very good surgeons at that hospital who do the same treatment as the doctor in Oxford so would I like to transfer my care to the hospital in the town over from me which of course I would it’s so much closer to home and i would feel so much better being close to home, but I’m like should I move from a bsge clinic to one that’s not? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you x

This is abit of a dilemma! Are you already diagnosed with endo? For me, I would have to stay with the BSGE clinic, as I have endo on the bladder so will need a urologist with an interest who has done this sort of surgery before. Also depends how happy you are with your gyne/travelling etc. Not an easy decision. Xx
Yeah I have already been diagnosed with stage 4 endo. I just don’t no what do to. The consultant is talking to her team on Monday and seeing if they will take my case I just don’t really no what to say I’m kinda like I can’t see the local hospital having a massive waiting list like Oxford so I might get my op done sooner but what if they mess up. So confused xx
OK, so just because Gloucester isn't an accredited bsge centre, doesn't mean they don't offer as good a service, it just means they aren't an official centre.
I go to Basingstoke and they aren't an accredited centre, but my consultant is brilliant, he has an interest in endo and minimally invasive surgery, and I think he does some work with the Hampshire clinic which is acreddited.
Yes, it's better if you have a bsge centre close by, but for me, having a good consultant is just as important as the accreditation of bsge. Just because you go the bsge centre, doesn't be necessarily mean your consultsnt/surgeon will be a good fit for you.
That said, if you feel more comfortable staying with Oxford because it's bsge, then you should. Maybe try going on your local hospital website and seeing if you can find out which consultants have an interest or specialise in endo? That's what I did with mine because I was thinking about switching to bsge centre but after I found out a bit about his specialist interests, I didn't bother.
Whatever decision you make, it has to be right for you.
Thank you so much for replying, my head is in such a spin about it all.
Yeah I had a look last night on the website and most of them have an interest in endo and have done endo surgeons so I’m kinda like yeah why not transfer to a closer hospital, like I grew up in Gloucester so I would feel so much better being somewhere I no and it would make it easier for family and travelling also like if anything went wrong it’s down the road not over an hour away. Sorry I am rambling now 😂 think I have taken a bit to much morphine this morning 😂
Personally I'd stay with the bsge clinic. Yes your hospital may be closer (as was mine) but they didn't seem as informed or know much about my stage 4 endo.
If it were me, I would pref to travel. I didn't have a good experience at my local hospital so we got out after a year of pointless meetings with a consultant who wanted to perform full hysterectomy despite both my oh and I saying we wanted a final go at IVF. I ended up going private for my surgery/lap in the end... and am 16 wks pregnant. Follow your heart x
I think it's worth checking out the techniques they use for treating endo carefully first. You need it removed by excision not ablation. Excision is the gold standard treatement and evidence suggests there is less chance of regrowth after excision than ablation as the removal is deeper. Not all surgeons are trained in excision of endo. many non specialist centres only offer ablation.
