Ultrasound done

Hi ladies, just had my ultrasound on Thursday and the man had to do an internal examination because he couldn't find my right ovary on the scan. Then didn't mention after if he had found it or not. I'm still experiencing strong leg pains, stomach pains, back pain and being bloated. Should I ask for further investigation???? If so what will it be???

Who sent you for the ultrasound, was it your GP? The next step is usually a referral to gynae/laparoscopy but be aware that some GP's don't understand that endo doesn't always show on ultrasound and may think that a clear ultrasound means there is nothing more to be done.

Hi,

It's good that you have been referred, rather than just being told 'everything seemed okay'. An ordinary external ultrasound cannot generally spot Endo, and a transvaginal ultrasound, with the probe in the vagina, should always be done, as this can spot some Endo, in certain places. So it is good that it was done, as (as joreilly has said) Gps often, wrongly, think there is no Endo, if only the usual, external ultrasound has been done, and that seems to be clear.

However, it would be good to find out a lot more about the procedures for identifying and removing Endo, as a lot of women are still not treated in the correct way. Talk to 'Endo UK' (link at the top of the page), and read around on here as much as possible. Lots of ordinary hospital gynaes do not know enough about Endo, and when they do a laparoscopy they do not always have the skills to: search all the hidden regions of the abdominal cavity; recognise the different forms of Endo tissue; and then remove it all, properly. It is often best if they are, first, just doing an exploratory, diagnostic lap, without removing any Endo, so that if it is bad you can be referred to a BSGE Centre = 'specialist Endo clinic'.

The best thing to do is read around on here as much as possible, learn all you can about Endo, maybe join a local group if there is one, and even read some books. I believe there is even an 'Endo for Dummies'. Sadly it's one of those conditions where we have to become our own best experts. Sorry it's a bit pessimistic, but please, do loads of finding out.

Take care.
