No. I had medical insurance prior to diagnosis. There was no problem with them paying out for 'total radical excision surgery' even though there was no specific code for this operation, they were aware of it and did not quibble at all.

As you say, generally policies will have a moratorium period where any pre-existing conditions are excluded. Some policies do not have this moratorium period but these tend to be company health insurance schemes and they negotiate bulk insurance. It is worth enquiring about though but it will obviously come at a price.

However, it is also possible to get the insurer to provide a quote from their underwriters regarding cover for any named pre-existing conditions and they would let you know how much extra the premiums might be to provide this cover. You would need to be prepared to provide them with all of the history though.

Best wishes x

I tried to get holiday insurance. I realize this is different, but just thought I would add to this post what happened.

I used the online applications for three well-known insurance providers, one of which was EHIC Expand. When I selected "Endometriosis" in the section for pre-existing conditions it was OK. But when I selected "Pelvic Peritoneal Adhesions", all three insurers refused to cover me.

In the end, I had to buy a policy that precluded my pre-existing conditions, packed all my meds, and hoped for the best while on holiday!

As others have said it depends on the type of policy, if its through work then normally it includes pre-existing conditons, however if you take the policy out individually as a personal policy then most providers will offer a policy based on excluding or including existing medical conditions and the price to include per-existing conditions is likely to be quite steep but if you think you may have surgery soon then the cost might be worth it - just as an example my surgery last month was £3200 all in and the next surgery in October is another £3500, last year my private medical bills were £2200. I'm lucky that I have private medical through my work so I only pay a £100 excess each year. Having now had private treatment I would really struggle to go back to relying 100% on the nhs, for me the convenience and service of private medical is brilliant and I would pay for my own cover if I didn't have it through work.

PS: For travel insurance I have found Sainsburys to be the cheapest by far when you disclose medical conditions, including endometriosis, and can all be done on their website.
