Hi MrsP70, This is a conversation to have with your doctor. There are many factors involved in what might be the cause of your IBS. As part of the conversation, find out if there is something to do with your diet to help.
As suggested you should talk this over with your doctor. BUT I have had some experience with this. I take treatments for stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer. The one particular immunotherapy drug has as a side effect IBS and actually attacks the colon. It once at the end of last year, hospitalized me with severe colitis. Constant severe, non stop diarrhea. Things were brought under control with prednisone. I was instructed to avoid Imodium, Pepto Bismol and such medications due to having stage 3 CKD. That to take these on an occasional basis is NOT harmful. But occasional was stressed. One of the problems with these medications is they are high in sodium, which increases bp, harms kidney. If I had to choose one more often than the rest it was recommended to use, after each bowel movement, Kaopectate. My primary care doctor went the old fashioned, but effective route of just have applesauce, etc. After a month long course of Prednisone (starting at 40mg per day), I went with just some applesauce after each movement, and knock on wood have been fine for weeks. The colon is active. You can hear it rumbling from a foot away. But that is all. TALK TO YOUR DOC.
