Increase in GFR after major diet change

I went to University of Michigan at Ann Arbor on Wednesday. Had a complete blood workup. On July 25 I started following "Stopping Kidney Disease" by Lee Hull. After 5 weeks I had lost 8 lbs (BMI < 19) so I had to modify diet. I went to pure vegan meaning I was having beans, lentils and other plant based sources of protein that were high in potential renal acid load.

GFR 52 (previously 40), BUN 17 (previously 28), sodium 141 (140), potassium 4.3 (4.4), creatnine 1.38 ( 1.7), Albumin 4.3 unchanged), calcium 9.7 (10.4), total protein 6.5 (7.1).

I will continue to stick to a pure vegan diet and may occasionally take albutrix if I have trouble getting enough protein. Hope this was helpful to others.

Well done for your determination.

Could you post a typical day meal plan.

dinner has most variety. Rest of day is similar. 3/4 cup cheerios, 1/2 cup milk, 1 tbsp flaxseed meal, non dairy yogurt, 1 Kashi bar, lunch is apple with Kale crackers or thin crackers with apple butter. some blueberries in afternoon, after dinner some non dairy Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

We have been having corn tortillas or vegan pasta or something from Trader Joe's for dinner. Some meals contain tofu. I eat as much as I can as I am trying to gain weight.

Congratulations. I,too, followed a renal diet, not vegan, and improved my numbers almost back to stage 2. Particularly good for a 66yo woman! My weight loss has been gradual, so not concerned. Do keep track of what foods challenge your kidney function. And best of luck.
