Well, at the very least I hope he is arranging for you to see a nephrologist or at the very very least has asked you to return in the next couple of weeks for a follow-up blood test to check your creatinine and eGFR readings to see if they have improved. At the present level, they show a possible problem with your kidney function (AKI stands for acute kidney injury). Don’t worry at this stage as there may be a short term problem, for instance some medications such as those for high blood pressure or even one for urine infections (Trimethoprim) can cause a temporary reduction in kidney function. Also, our function reduces if we are elderly. Make sure this is followed up with your GP - meanwhile drink plenty of water, not too much protein and avoid all NSAIDs (Ibuprofen and the like) with a barge pole. Good luck and do come back and let us know how you get on.

i have another blood test in a couple of weeks, I personally think what caused all this was when i was pregnant i had hyperemesis and was really dehydrated also had high blood pressure so was on meds for that, they said it should get better once i have the baby but my son is nearly 2 and its just getting worse, my blood pressure is perfect so not sure what else it could be, but they did a scan on my kidneys and said they were both measuring small, i never knew this but they saying i could of been born with small kidneys

I would press my Dr for a referral to a nephrologist instead of just retesting. That way you will know for sure what's going on. If you don't understand something ask a question. Good luck.

Yes your urea and more importantly your creatinine are high. (outside normal). The creatinine is the one that then determines that your GFR is 40. I can speak from experience that my GFR has been in the 38 to 41 range for the past months since one of my kidneys was removed. Before that my numbers were all normal. From the information you have provided (small kidneys...but how small?) this MAY be the cause of your numbers being high. In your lifetime, do you recall ever getting your blood tested that gave you numbers all in the normal range. I only wonder about this to see if perhaps your numbers are in this range always because of the "small kidneys" and NOT diseased kidneys. Just like mine are in this range because of one kidney. Perhaps 2 small kidneys are simply unable to result in normal numbers, but are actually normal numbers for you. It is NOT too surprising your doctor did not refer you to a kidney doctor. My kidney removal was by a urologist. At the time I also see a gp, and a cardiologist, and an oncologist because the bad kidney had cancer. NONE of them referred to me a kidney doctor. Finally, upon my request one did. I visited the kidney doctor. It was a total waste of time. My other doctors already told me the basics. Drink 60 to 70 ounces of water a day. Walk daily 30 to 40 minutes. Do not eat excessive amounts of beef or protein. Keep all other consumption within daily values (salt, sugar, etc.). Avoid alcohol. At this point there is not much more you can or should do. If it brings you peace of mind to see another doctor or kidney doctor, then certainly do so. See what your next test shows. The high urea can easily be effected by dehydration. The creatinine slightly, but not that much. All I can say is you will think of this at first every moment of every day. After some time you will think of it less. It will never leave your thoughts totally. But other than what we have talked about, there is not much more you can do. But I DO think your doctor should have explained, and still should, more about your results to you.

i was seeing a kidney specialist when i was pregnant because my kidneys went down to 23% and then a few times after i had the baby i seen the special and he said it went up to 50% but i just had a blood test a few months ago and its gone down to 40%, im not sure how small but when they told me they said they were really small and then was told to hve another scan and if they were definitely small then theres nothing they could do but i dint understand what he meant by that.. but wil be askn them this time i go.. i wasnt told to do anything tbh but i wil be asking alot of questions this time as im worried and they should have explained to me more and told me what to do to help them stay at 50% but never did
