Drastic Drop in GFR
izmich, renal consultants aren’t usually too concerned when patients are diagnosed with a reduced eGFR that is within stage 3a/b of CKD.....as long as repeat blood tests show that it remains stable. You need to be investigated further to find out the reason for the continuing downward spiral. Some BP meds can aggravate kidney function as can anti-inflammatory meds, or even a ‘silent’ UTI. Meanwhile, drink plenty of water and avoid salt in you ur diet and too much protein.
Yes mine stayed steady for months then recently started falling till in high twenties. GP has given me a diuretic but I see kidney specialist today. It's a scary time as GP said I have moved to stage 4.
I certainly undertand your concern. such a drop and I too would be thinking of nothing else all of my day. it is my nature to worry. But you do have the positive part that the rest of your functions seem stable. A lot of things influence egfr. As Celtic wrote, changes in CKD stage 3 a/b should be looked at but so many things can influence these changes. I give you an example. I have been taking (I am 3b) two meds to control blood pressure. 2.5mg amlodipine in the morning. 20 mg lisinopril in the evening. My blood pressure numbers were generally 120's/60's throughout the day. My kidney doctor and gp said just continue. My egfr would range from 36 to 41 (up and down). My cardiologist said to let's try to reduce the lisinopril to just 10mg. That ACE can actually lower egfr. I did so for 6 weeks. My blood pressures which were okay, actually DROPPED with the removal of 1/2 of the lisinopril. My efgr went up to 44. The 4 best things to help your egfr is control blood pressure, watch your diet (for salt and protein intake. but don't go crazy. just stay within the normal daily recommended requirements), exercise (moderately, walking) and pay attention to medications (both over the counter and prescription).
Thanks. This is all new and this forum is actually better than the doctor has been.
Make sure that you are keeping hydrated! Sometimes you think you are drinking enough, but you are not. That alone can affect your numbers
It is great news that your kidney blood tests are AOK. Keep up with your fluids, no salt, low protein and stay active.....
Let us know what your next tests show.
I am 19 years post transplant. .....have been there, done that........
Thanks for you words of encouragement. Today I go for my ultrasound. I am so confused and afraid of this disease and how it has already changed my life. My Mother and sister both have this and I've seen what's it's done to them. This forum is helping me see it in a different way. Thank you
