Good question cheetah. Is there any answer? Hopefully with lifestyle changes such as diet and control of other medical issues we can avoid dialysis as long as possible. Every ones medical situation is different and some may be more prone toward dialysis than others?
I have high blood pressure which is now controlled no diabetes and gfr 65. So what you're saying dialysis is immemit?
Not saying that dialysis is imminent for everyone. Everyone situation is different. Your Doctor might be able to give you information on probabilities of dialysis depending on age, health etc. Some people might take 15 years others 5 and others never?
OC41 I couldn't agree with you more. It is entirely dependent on the individual's medical issues. Contributing factors like hypertension and diabetes and their effect on CKD as well as (if) any meds are taken as well as diet, exercise, and lifestyle play a significant role in how fast the progression of kidney disease advances.
Too many people ignore the changes needed until it is too late to hold off dialysis and many more listen to their doctor who tells them "not to worry." Now, to be clear, you shouldn't worry, but you should begin to be proactive by learning about CKD, and knowing what changes you can make in your life to hold off dialysis.
Agree with you Mr Kidney. Being proactive is important.
Cheetah8351 - As I understand it, patients are referred for dialysis when they reach stage four. Check with your doctor. I was diagnosed with stage three CKD more than three years ago and my disease has not progressed to stage four. I follow the Davita dietary guidelines. However, my blood pressure is not as low as my cardiologist would like it to be
No depends on age & what caused it as you get older your kidneys deteriorate along with everything else! my husbands consultant many years ago told him he may never need it hes had problems for many years along with his brother his brother 63 is still stable at stage 3 whilst my husband 62 has been on dialysis for 7 years they both live a similar lifestyle but my husband also has heart trouble & they think that contributed to him being on dialysis now! they were both advised to eat a normal healthy diet keep a healthy weight & exercise my husband was stable stage 3 for at least 15/16 years that we know of!
As everyone has mentioned, each person is different. If you can determine the cause - was it caused by diabetes, high blood pressure, genetics/ hereditary, previous disease, medications taken, environmental issues AND if you can determine type of which there are many- see here for complete list kidney.nyc/types-of-kidney-.... THEN, you can have the best options for a specific treatment plan for your individual needs. Unfortunately, without a biopsy, there is only a guess as to the type and even then the cause is not always known as it could have been caused by so many factors or a combination of them.
So even with different situations with CKD good or bad with prior health issues, good gfr low creatinine levels you can't live the rest of you life without dialysis right?!?!
no not at all,if u can go 4 kidney friendly diets , no smoking, some excersises, n less salt in food, u can control falling GFR , also if u are hypertensive take anti hypertensive meds without fail.
