Help with Diet

Hello everyone!

I was diagnosed 3 years ago and with the sudden shock of it all I stopped all sports and weightlifting (ex light bodybuilding) when I found out I stopped everything. 1 year ago I started cycling which I really enjoy and currently do circa 100 miles a week. My question is this - I'm going to go back to the weight lifting and I'm interestedin fin ding out a diet which would match my condition. I have seen a dietician who wasn't very helpful she said I can eat 100g protein a day which I'm happy with doing. Is there anyone else out there who plays sports and has a great fitness diet they would like to share with the priority of keeping the kidneys healthy?

Thanks in advance

Dean

Hello Dean

You don't say at what stage you are at with your kidney disease. I am at stage 3 CKD with a eGFR of around 38 to 40. I eat most what i like in moderation with plenty of fluids, however I am female, so don't do heavy exercise.

Hi I'm not 100% sure what stage I'm at my egfr is at 85 when I last got it done. Seen my nephrologist yesterday and he said I'm doing fine nothing to worry about??

85 is really good, so you must be doing something right, I would love an eGFR of 85, Eat what you like in moderation, and drink plenty.

Range 60 to 89 is stage 2 so that's excellent

So who diagnosed you as your kidneys at 85 are in the normal range ?

Hi retwos,

I started with pain in my right flank 3 years ago so I get send for a ultrasound as the gp thought it was a kidney stone. But the scan showed up multiple cysts on both kidneys. Then I got referee to a nephrologist who confirmed it. Even tho I'm lucky to have good stats. Thanks Dean

If you have PKD, you are automatically placed in stage 3 as long as your eGFR is >60. Below 60 come stages 3a and 3b, then stages 4 and 5.

My stage is G3A1 with eGFR of 69 and normoalbuminuria.

I've got a few useful links you might want to check out.

I'm not sure I'd say there's a 'fitness diet' sounds faddy. Also your early CKD, so presumably a fair bit of kidney function.. I'd suggest hydration and keeping away from excessively processed foods, excess salt, sports drinks and other crap (milk actually hydrates better and faster than the short term buzz of lucosade)

You may need to work out for yourself how much protein and carbs you need if your very active. Cook/prep as much as you can from fresh or locally grown.
