in the uk the creatine would be in the 100s at stage 3 then over 220 is stage 4 & i'm assuming bun is maybe the equivalent to egfr which is your % of kidney function left ie egfr 36 would be 36% function left just try to drink more if they say you are dehydrated!

Like Phillen bellow it's good to drink water at your stage 2 litres a day, you may see your numbers improve.

Hi Denny, My husband saw a nephrologist for the first time last Friday as his CKD had dropped from 56 last December, to 37 then 35 and now 27. He said the main problem seemed to be dehydration but my husband really struggles drinking too much water or any other liquid. He had a kidney and bladder scan and needed to drink plenty of water before the scan and sadly threw it all back before he had it. So far the nephrologist has prescribed 500mg sodium bi-carbonate capsules. The dosage is 2 capsules 3 times a day to help hydrate the kidneys. Have since found out that many people with CKD also take sodium bi-carb and they are available without a prescription. . I am not however suggesting you take this without consulting your G.P. or someone with medical qualifications. This morning he has been for a blood and urine test and we go back to see the neph. again this Friday. We were told that in his opinion there was not too much to worry about and he will provide us with a plan to hopefully maintain good health. Apart from the tiredness my husbands main problem is very painful gout but it is hoped these episodes will decrease with hydration. Feeling very positive last Friday so hope to remain the same after this Fridays visit. Best Wishes, keep well. Belle

Gout - I had some very helpful information on this site regarding gout as I have suffered quite badly with it in the past. I now drink 2/3 glasses of cherry juice per day and it has made a great difference to the pain I was suffering. Also, drink plenty of water. It all makes a difference, good luck 😊

Hi Denny, If you are able to drink plenty of water then it could help your CKD level. Also try and avoid anti-inflammatory treatment i.e. ibuprofen etc., not good for the kidneys. Best wishes. Belle

I have just found out that I am stage 2. It was by accident when the doctor's surgery printed my blood results. Apparently they have known since 2011, but failed to tell me. So I decided to do some research. We need to drink plenty of water, but our tap water contains chlorine, fluoride and lots of other unwanted stuff (check on your local water website for a list of what is in your tap water). So I decided to get a water filter that removed the chlorine and fluoride predominantly. My point is that if I don't use a water filter then our kidneys are having to work an awful lot harder to filter these unwanted additives. I have only had the filter for a week but the first thing I noticed was how great the water tasted once filtered. I looked at Brita filters but they don't remove chlorine. I purchased an Australian brand. I would advise anyone with CKD and even those without it to invest in a good water filter for themselves and loved ones. This is my first post, I hope it helps someone.

Thanks for this tip, jesswecan. I had never given it a thought! I'm off to look at filters at the first opportunity!

Hi Bellefrank, Does your husband take any blood pressure meds? If so, check it out. My kidneys, which have been dodgy for many years, went into a rapid decline over a period of 3 years and only yesterday my nephrologist informed me that the BP med I had been on during those years had caused it! I am furious that my GP prescribed something unsuitable that was going to worsen my kidney function.

Hi pennyruss.. what was ur bp meds..I am on bp meds too at stage 2..

Hi Mykl,

I was on candesartan, but to be fair, each of the BP meds I have been prescribed over the years states in the blurb in the packet some warning about kidneys. My beef is that in spite of my kidney conditioning worsening, this possibility was never discussed and I had no idea how bad my kidneys were because no one raised any alarm until I changed doctor 3 years ago and then it was all systems go! I think possibly the original GP thought I was just moving faster on the inevitable downward spiral, perhaps due to my age and the length of time I had had dodgy kidneys. if you are on Stage 2 and eat and drink all the right things you could stay there for a long time! I I am now at Stage 3B but my gfr has gone up 7 points to 34 since I came off the candesartan and have taken my diet more seriously.

I watch my sodium ,is there something else you watch besides

sodium.potassium,phosorpous?

Pennyruss profile image
Pennyruss in reply todenny123

Hi Denny,

I have cut out bananas and cut right down on tomatoes to reduce potassium. My potassium level is 4.6 which seems high to me but apparently there is no cause for concern unless it reaches about 5.4. Apart from that I ahve cut right down on red meat and hard cheeses but this is partly for my blood pressure problems. I am really interested in jesswecan's info about water. I had not given a thought to my kidneys having to filter out chlorine etc. I thought creatinine below 4 was good so am a bit mystified that you are concerned about yours. Mine is too high 4.8 so I really must investigate !!

Tnx for the info pennyruss, actually i survived stroke 3 mnths ago and found out my creatinine was at 1.7..i checked google and all points me at ckd stage 2 or 3..im taking valsartan and amlodipine for my bp..it scares me a bit thinking of getting through dialysis in a short time..im new to this i dont have any idea how long it was at 1.7..

mykl, I'm really sorry that for 'creatinine' I read cholesterol! Senior moment, I think! To make amends

I've just looked up my creatinine result from a test last week and it says 132 umoI/L and the norm is 60.00-120.00umoI/L . I know my score is too high because it is outside the norm and has an exclamation mark next to it! How that relates to your 1.7 I don't know.

I'm sorry to hear you had a stroke which must have been tough and very worrying. I hope you are recovering well.

As I said somewhere before, my GFR reading this time is 34, which is better than last time, (27) and the neph told me I was at Stage 3 B. If it is any encouragement (Idon't know how old you are!) he said I was unlikely to die of CKD. and certainly made no mention of dialysis.

Pennyruss, im 38 yrs old and i would say i fully recovered from my stroke after 3 mnths..i have not checked any neph yet just my neurologist and he said il be fine with 1.7 creatinine..hopefully..hehe and no idea of my gfr yet since normal level of crea is up to 1.3 for men..tnx again :D1

Hi mykl,

Really pleased to hear you are making a good recovery and glad you have had reassurance from a neurologist on the creatinine query. The last thing you need is worry, especially unnecessary worry!

Hi Pennyruss, thank-you for your info. Fortunately my husband has very normal blood pressure and in his younger days it was really low and also had a low pulse rate. He was very fit, enjoyed lots of sports in fact athletic. His success was put down to these facts at the time as many athletes have the bonus of low BP and heart rate. Now his BP is so called normal.....but for him of course it has raised considerably. In the past he has been given and taken various anti-inflammatories for joint injuries etc.....I think but only my opinion these have not helped his kidneys..... Some of these drugs have since been withdrawn.....

About evaluating water filters: In the U.S., Consumer Reports Magazine and Consumer Reports online list their ratings of residential water filters. I have been using bottled water, supposedly from springs, but now that I've been diagnosed with Stage 3 CKD, I will ask the bottling company what is in the water in terms of potassium, etc.

Creatinine Bun atop is 1:10.

drchidam profile image

it is Creatinene Bun Ratio is 1:10 and not atop1:10

drchidam profile image
drchidam

Here Creatinine and Bun ratio is not normal ,Bun is high due to PreRenal Renal Failure ,can be corrected with Hydration like I.V Fluids like Normal Saline.
