Hi, I've had diabetes (type 1) for 23 years and have just been diagnosed with kidney disease which was picked up in a routine test by the presence of microalbumin in urine. I'd be grateful to hear from anyone else as I currently feel like my world's been turned upside down.

Diabetic kidney disease, age 27, newly diagnosed
Hi Georgina, I too was diagnosed with ckd over a year ago I am 37. Unlike you I have no definitive answer as to the cause. Wondered if you know what level your gfr is? It's the filtration rate of your kidneys. Mine is 60 at the mo which isn't too bad. I am a nurse not a doctor however it's important to Say Ckd is extremely common and doesn't instantly mean kidney failure. I panicked at first especially as my gfr has decreased. You do obviously have to monitor your diabetes and maintain a healthy lifestyle but just remember although kidney function will naturally decrease with.age as does everyone's, it doesn't necessarily mean failure and shortened life span.... There are things you.can do to maintain kidney function for as long.as possible. I found this site very helpful and hope you do too. Hazel x
