Bicarbonate of soda with ckd
Hi Bowler. I take sodium bicarbonate but not bicarbonate of soda. The sodium bicarb is because my blood is quite acidic and left untreated could lead to diabetes. Hope this helps.
I take also take sodium bicarbonate to raise my blood pressure (that's what I was told, now Im not so sure that's why)
I have very low blood pressure so I'm interested in hearing about taking Bicarbonate of soda to alleviate it. As a matter of interest how much do you take daily? And is it in powder or tablet form?
Thanks.
I have stage 3 ckd level at 39. I am due for a kidney ultrasound in Aug,
I have in the past taken bicarbonate of soda [ the same as I use for cookining ] for mild cystitis symptoms, not sure if I should take anymore till I get sorted, I assume sodium bicarbonate, is different from bicarbonate of soda ?
No, I think it is the same thing according to the online dictionary. It can be used as an antacid or a raising agent.
Thank you for your reply.
B/soda really works for me to neutralize the urine, but I do have to have antibiotics if I have an infection.
However I have now been refered to the hospital, so hopefully they will sort me out. I only wish the ultrasound was a bit sooner, but I cant complain as I only saw the Dr at the hospital on Tues, and Aug. was the soonest they could fit me in.

Thank you for this link, most interesting and informative.
I started using bicarbonate of soda over 30 years ago for the occasional mild cystitis after reading a book by Angela Kilmartin. I am 68 now and still swear by it.
However I was a bit concerned wether to continue with it whilst I am undergoing tests, but it seems it is ok to take. I dont take it on a regular basis, only when I think I need it, but who know's, after my tests they may want me to take it every day?
Hope this helps, It is supposed to reduce the amount of damage to the kidneys. A trial found that people with both chronic kidney disease and metabolic acidosis benefited from oral bicarbonate supplements over a two-year period. The study has some shortcomings, but provides strong evidence that these supplements could be used in treatment. The researchers have called for further research to confirm their findings.
The exact place of this in standard treatment for people with chronic kidney disease is not yet known. In practice, people with severe renal disease may receive sodium bicarbonate as part of their treatment in hospital anyway.
I was put on sodium bicarbonate tablets just over 12 months ago - as previously stated because my blood was very acidic. I have also been undergoing tests for potential transplant later this year. However, it now appears that my kidney function has not deteriorated at the rate they thought it would - and having read the article mentioned in the earlier link I now wonder whether the sodium bicarbonate has something to do with this. Having said that my blood is still acidic and they have just doubled my dose to 2400 mg per day.
