It was on this day in 1935 Dr. Bob the co-founder sobered up using the methods suggested by Bill W who met each other mothers day. Dr. Bob was reluctant to do the stuff suggested by Bill W fearing for exposure and losing business. Finally he was convinced that he has to do the necessary stuff in order for him to sober up. June 10th 1935 is celebrated as a Foundation day. 1939 they captured the experiences of the first 100 people who sobered up and wrote the book Alcoholics Anonymous. We now have a solution!

I agree. The representation of AA by media is not a fair representation of what AA has done for humanity.

Each group is unique as you know, as far as meetings go, and some can be very preachy, some can be very bible oriented, even though no religion should be promoted, and some comments I have heard address these issues of meetings being like a cult because of all the slogans and phrases. The important part is often side stepped, it has saved lives, it saved my life.

There are reasons for people to look for the negative side of something that can help them like a twelve step program. One reason can be because they aren’t ready to stop drinking. Excuses…..I made plenty of them and some I made up.

Bingo!... as you can expect that from many who like ourselves... found a dictionary full of excuses 'why we drink'..... if it was Tuesday....it was a good time to drink for me.

Oh, yeah….get dressed up, have a nice dinner and no champagne? No way! Take a shower and not bring a drink in with me? Impossible. Can’t do it. But we can and did. The food is sooo good and the shower is heaven now.

At least now we remember having the food and taking the shower....I've woken up in the shower and not remembered how I got there...yep...been there, done that, and have the T-shirt and the mug....

These things are funny now in a kind of snide way, to those of us who have been at this rodeo for a while, and by no means am I making light of it...but to wear the guilt, regret, and remorse is unhealthy and detrimental to my sobriety...so now...

So to a newcomer these things are still fresh and painful...but in time, they will heal more and not feel so raw in our memories, but also never forget, it's what helps me stay sober...

As always, so well said. Yes, we give ourselves permission now to laugh a little at ourselves. We can poke fun without forgetting where we came from. I liked a good speakers meeting even in early sobriety. Humor was usually part of the mix. After all….we’re not a glum lot.

Humor is healing, love is healing, sharing is caring....yeah I said it....but it's all true.
