Having a bad day

I’m 71 and suffered with depression on and off all my life. I’m having a bad day today. I gave up alcohol just over two weeks ago which has helped. I can’t explain what’s going on in my head because I don’t understand it myself. It frightens me sometimes that this is my life. I’m losing mobility because of illness but EVERY DAY I get up and try to be positive. Thanks for reading this.

Hi Crochetchia, you have stopped subduing your feelings with alcohol. When you take alcohol away those emotions will come to the surface. This is difficult but a really important part of the process. Learning how to cope with them will help with your future sobriety and will just HELP with life in general. As you have reduced mobility its a bit harder to just get up and take yourself off somewhere but building distractions helps. A regular seated exercise class, a lunch club, a book club, sitting out in the fresh air, reading lots of literature on how others quit can all help. When the cravings hit, a warm shower, a cocoa made with milk, a meditation app like head space can all help. Your anti depressants will work better minus alcohol and the inflammation in your joints will improve a bit because alcohol is an inflammatory substance. If you can't do this alone search up a sober coach or go to your GP. You are doing a fantastic but hard thing, get all the help you can xxx

You are what you eat and drink! I can consider many mental health difficulties are indeed metabolic problems. Not really a self-help book, but a treatise on diet and mental health - worth a read...Brain Energy by Chris Palmer. Good luck with the sobriety - I'm 2+ years in (age 73) - I lost 20 lbs in 3 months, best result from booze-free - I read, talk, write and think clearer. Look for substitutes NA beer, wine, seltzers, herbal teas.
