How does cinnamon affect diabetes? Results from a clinical study published in the Diabetes Care journal in 2003 suggest that cassia cinnamon (cinnamon bark) improves blood glucose and cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes, and may reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
I agree with Mr gangadharan and srilankan cinnamon is good in lowering blood glucose level. But the limit is 2 to max 6 grams.so though effective overdose has negative effects.
You need to be careful about cinnamon...a popular Indian kitchen ingredients...... no indian kitchen is complete without cinnamon....you may be aware.......no doubt it has blood glucose lowering effect and indians diabetes have been using it since time immemorial...but there is a controversy if one wants to take cinnamon only in large dose to control blood glucose.... Two issues here ....
(1) It can reduce by 10-15 points.... but can not lower by 40-50 points by cinnamon alone...
(2) there are many studies indicate carcinogenic effect if cassia cinnamon is taken in large dose. ...
So Ceylon cinnamon is recommended as per Makrim.... ...
Some articles say Cassia is better....like Gangadharan says....
Fact is that Ceylon cinnamon is 3 times costlier than Cassia cinnamon in India ...
I leave it to you Sandy, Gangadharan and Makrim to conclude this..... Which one should one use Ceylon or Cassia...???
Currently I use Cinnamon tea imported from Chennai ....not for blood glucose lowering .. as it also has antioxidant properties along with cardamom ....
Nowadays, I find a lot of studies released from USA/ Europe on effectiveness of Cinnamon for type 2 Diabetes. I also find a lot of articles published on benefits of 100% Plant food for controlling type 2 Diabetes / type 1 Diabetes....all released from USA / Europe 🙂
Anyway, this prompted me to do an extensive study on Cinnamon - Cassia vs Ceylon...I am attaching few links at the end of this message ...
My observations:
(1) Both are beneficial for diabetes in lowering blood sugar to some extent. Dose up to 2 GM's per day has been used....But Cassia appears to contain Coumarin which may be toxic in large dose to liver if taken regularly...however Ceylon cinnamon has negligible Coumarin and hence can be taken regularly without fear...
Cassia is readily available in all grocery stores in India and USA..Ceylon needs to be imported from Ceylon
(2) Apart from Blood Glucose lowering , both varieties have antioxidant properties and also Anti clotting properties .
(3) you may have to monitor your blood glucose level if you take Cinnamon and you may have to reduce your current medications if required...
(4) one should be careful if he is taking Aspirin and Clopridogrel --since cinnamon has blood thinning properties. Consult your physician before you use cinnamon if you are taking blood thinner medicines as mentioned above...
(5) while I find there are 4000 people who have given 5 star to Ceylon organic capsules in Amazon , there is no need to buy capsules from Amazon by paying Rs4000 for one month's dose..
May be you can buy Cinnamon from grocery stores , grind to powder at home...does not matter whether cassia or Ceylon...
You can sprinkle 1 gm of powder with tomato soup or any vegetable soup or tea...or even a half a cup oat meal twice daily ....is a good way to start...
There is so many thing I read about cinnamon but my personal experience says balance of spices I mean not only cinnamon, when making curry just add pc of cinnamon, clove, tejpata, pepper corn, cardamom in little oil saute them and than add your curry ingredient or rice or what ever u are cooking oil will infused its flavour and will give health combination of medicinal property of the herb
We can't take too much of anything it is poison and casual alone can't cure diabetic. There are many other herbs are there for t.v. I was controlling till last year but now I am not .
It is a nice idea as far as flavour is concerned... But you may not get the full nutritional benefits of the Indian spice.. as cooking at high temp... Nutritional value get destroyed...
So what I do:.
Take Ceylon Cinnamon... Powder it by dry grinder....
Similarly grind some cardamom seeds pepper, dry ginger powder... Nowadays garlic powder is also available ..
Mix all podwers ...keep in a glass container ...
I make tomato soup and sprinkle 1 TSF in one Cup of soup.....
