BMI,% waist measurement to that of hip, waist measurement etc. are broad indicators of our general physical condition and help us to set goals for ourselves. There is nothing absolute about these indices for clinical assessment of a person's health of person. As a layman,I would strive to achieve these recommendations ,so that at least I will get the feeling that I have done whatever is necessary to safe guard my health.
"Waist-to-height ratio (W/Ht) is increasingly being used in preference to Body Mass Index (BMI) as a better measurement of the risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease. ... The advice is to keep your waist circumference less than half of your height."
There is always discussion on South Asian men and waist!
In the world of technology most people can understand both BMI and waist to be 1/2 the height. We need the waist size to get a pair of trousers!
BMI is man made calculator like many other medical calculations, how do and how often doctors calibrate their measuring devices. An example a lady went for angio gram, sent home with medication saying you have blocked artery and wait for the results!, question if the lad had blocked artery why the hospital did not do a stent?
In the evening the lady had breathing problems, was take to another hospital by ambulance, the hospital put the lady in CCU. Some explanation to say a pace maker is necessary and wait for another angio gram the next day. Well the good news is the the medication side effect caused the lady heart problems and was sent home with new medication!!!
Any way as long as a layman can help himself to better health from what ever the understanding to enjoy one life.
