Some background

Positive lifestyle changes, such as attempting to lose weight or quit smoking, can be difficult to maintain. However, for many patients with diabetes mellitus, changes to diet, fitness and self-management habits (for example closely monitoring blood glucose levels several times a day) are crucial for preventing serious diabeticcomplication.

Motivational interviewing is a form of therapy designed to motivate change in individuals unwilling or unable to make changes on their own. During motivational interviewing a trained therapist works with an individual, first to understand why they are having difficulty making positive lifestyle changes, and then to help make and maintain the necessary changes. The key to successful motivational interviewing, however, is in the understanding that patients have the right to make no changes at all, rather than attempting to force unwanted change. While motivational interviewing has proven to be successful in many areas of medicine, it is unclear whether it can play a role in the management of diabetes.

Very much so.It is rather tough maintaining the discipline required to manage diabetes.Watching videos on diabetic complications helps a lot in keeping the motivational levels high.Showing the videos to the wife and near ones will also be helpful.

its the discipline that makes it hard and should be maintained.

Good information. There are basically 4 factors required in managing diabetes and any disease.

1) motivation : the most important. Fear is the best feeling that brings motivation. Fear of complication and compromised life. Everyone in the family passes hard time managing complications. Loss of time, money, jod, peace etc

2) determination : thought that i must do this or that to reverse my diabetes. Equally important.

3) knowledge : one has to know what diabetes is.Family too must learn.

4) family support : family has to prepare meal that suits the diabetics.Family too perhaps has to accommodate a bit to the change in the diet style.
