Some background
Positive lifestyle changes, such as attempting to lose weight or quit smoking, can be difficult to maintain. However, for many patients with diabetes mellitus, changes to diet, fitness and self-management habits (for example closely monitoring blood glucose levels several times a day) are crucial for preventing serious diabeticcomplication.
Motivational interviewing is a form of therapy designed to motivate change in individuals unwilling or unable to make changes on their own. During motivational interviewing a trained therapist works with an individual, first to understand why they are having difficulty making positive lifestyle changes, and then to help make and maintain the necessary changes. The key to successful motivational interviewing, however, is in the understanding that patients have the right to make no changes at all, rather than attempting to force unwanted change. While motivational interviewing has proven to be successful in many areas of medicine, it is unclear whether it can play a role in the management of diabetes.
