For years eggs were considered more of a health risk than a healthy food. This is because they were considered a high cholesterol food, so those with high cholesterol levels were advised to avoid them. We now know that the cholesterol found in food has much less of an effect on our blood cholesterol than the amount of saturated fat we eat. If you’ve been advised by your GP to change your diet in an attempt to reduce your blood cholesterol levels, the best thing to do is to keep to daily guideline intakes for saturated fat (20g for the average woman and 30g for the average man) opting instead for mono-unsaturated fats found in olive and rapeseed oils. It's also a good idea to increase your intake of fruit, vegetables and fibre whilst minimising sugars and refined carbs.

I couldn't eat eggs for a long time, but I can take an occasional egg as long as it is organic free range.

My problem was the antibiotics and hormones routinely fed that was affecting me after 2 courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics that I shouldn't have been given with penicillin allergy wrecked my health, gut and immune system.

I never have an egg two days running - probably 3 days apart sometimes more. However, I feel eggs are good for me with many nutrients including biotin and B12.

I would not risk factory farmed eggs, though.

I like to know where my eggs come from and how the hens are treated.

Like any food best not to eat too much unless needing a certain nutrient in them perhaps.

I only eat them boiled or poached and not with milk or any other food and I prepare them myself and eat fresh.

The discussions regarding effect of dietary cholesterol on serum cholesterol is an ongoing and probably a never ending one.I have seen experts saying that you should not feed the yellow of the egg to your pet dog to another opinion that eating three or even six eggs a day has no adverse effects on one's health.Others debunk the theory that cholesterol itself has no bearing on one's heart health to another view that statins should be added to the municipal water so that the entire population can have safe levels of cholesterol. So,I have chosen a moderate path and eat one egg a day so that nutritional needs of a vegetarian like me are met.So far,my BP and heart health have been uniformly good.I am 77 yrs old now.

What is the difference between dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol?

Dietary cholesterol is what is present in the food we consume like in eggs, meat, fats etc.Serum cholesterol is what is present in our blood stream. The cholesterol we consume is metabolized by the digestive system and used for energy requirements.Cholesterol is vital for our body functions and so the body itself produces it's requirement of cholesterol. Some types of cholesterol like HDL are good for healthy living but certain other types like LDL and triglycerides are harmful,if in excess. Now the present discussion is whether if the food we consume is rich in cholesterol like yellow yolk of an egg results in high cholesterol levels in the blood stream i.e.serum.I suggest that you search on the internet for more detailed information, since what I have indicated is rudimentary.

Human body produces 80% cholesterol on demand for body function. 20% is from what goes into our mouth. Say if the cholesterol is 5 and full 20% come from what goes into our mouth, then the total is 6.

Therefore we need to ask a medical doctor the question why is my body producing high cholesterol and go for necessary tests, OK.
