Please refer to above web site for details. But for easy reference I am quoting some relevent points.
By switching off a single gene, converted HUMAN gastro- intestinal cells into INSULIN producing cells.
Although insulin producing cells can now be made in lab. from stem cells, these cells do not yet have all functions of naturally occurring pancreatic beta cells
Previous work by Dr. A cilia lab had shown that mouse intestinal cells can be transformed into insulin producing cells. The current Colombian study shows that this technique also works in HUMAN cells.
The Colombian researchers were able to teach HUMAN GUT cells to make insulin in response to physiological circumstances by deactivating the cells' FOX01 gene.
The important point is these human cells started releasing insulin AND equally important, ONLY in response to GLUCOSE.
