Majority of type 2 diabetes suffer from insulin resistance. Monitoring of insulin level provides an indication of the degree of insulin resistance and also beta-cells function. It should be done along with fasting glucose test. It has be done at the lab. Because insulin test is still not a standard test, Doctors are not asking for this routinely. One reason for this is that the normal values of insulin vary among the various populations. Still, this can provide valuable insights into for type 2 diabetes e.g. if you change your diet and lifestyle, the improvement may be reflected in the lower insulin level. Other test which does the same thing is C-peptide.
