Dear Dr. Bernstein,

Happy 83rd Birthday! I hope you have a great time celebrating with family and friends today. I wish we could throw a gigantic worldwide party in your honor and you could see how many lives you’ve touched. What an amazing party that would be!

It’s even more poignant that today is your 83rd, which is the number that you’ve noted is the average “normal” non-diabetic glucose number; the number that we, as diabetics, should strive to achieve.

I want to take this time to thank you and tell you how much you mean to me and to so many other people that you’ve helped around the world. I spent 12 years following the standard advice from my doctors. I had A1c levels in the 7% range and was told I was doing great. But I didn’t feel great. I was clinically depressed and diabetes felt hopeless. I was slogging through every day with questions and doubt. I couldn’t see anything else.

When I finally stumbled upon your book, I was shocked. Could this really help? I’d tried everything, so I might as well try this, too. After following your plan for a few days, I was pleasantly surprised. After a week, I was hooked. Now, two and a half years later, my life is completely changed because of Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution book.

My A1c has been consistently in the high 4% and low 5% range since following the Law of Small Numbers. I’m not depressed any longer, but actually hopeful for a healthy future – despite T1D for for the last 15 years. To put it mildly, your program works – but you already know that. I’m a huge fan and I’ve devoted this new chapter of my life to diabetes advocacy and support.

Thank you for not giving up 40 years ago when you were suffering from debilitating T1D complications. Thank you for using your training in engineering to problem solve, and find a better way for yourself. You were indeed the first ‘biohacker.’ Thank you for never taking ‘no’ for an answer. Thank you for going to Med school as an adult, with a young family. I know it’s not been easy for you. Thank you for all the information that you’ve worked so tirelessly to put into the public. Thank you for being an advocate for all of us.

We wouldn’t be here, with such bright futures ahead of us, without you to have shown us the path and lead the way. Thank you. Happy 83rd Birthday, Dr. B!

Forever 83,

Lisa

rmvasalvad, thank you for sharing that letter to Dr. Bernstein on this forum. I totally agree with the Lisa, the sender of the birthday message, regarding Dr. Bernstein. And it does give me a lot of hope that my daughter Aisha can manage her diabetes well - currently with medication, but hopefully without it from next year onwards with the help of only LCHF diet.

I am impressed with your anxiety for your dear daughter's health .

I would suggest that you will still need specialist doctors advise for your daughter instead of depending on diet alone what ever it is.Is the cancer under treatment and cured?

Yes thank you, the treatment is over, and now she is on hormone therapy which must continue for 10 years. Unfortunately I learn that 'cure' is a word we cannot use in breast cancer treatment, not for a long, long time. But she is well, has gone back to work and is feeling positive. I am grateful for her overall health, her mental well-being and positive outlook on life. She has donated her insurance reimbursement Rs.2 lacs to the Baptist hospital, a mission hospital in Bangalore where she received treatment.

We eat steamed rice at home, basmati rice now and then. My daughter avoids rice at night, has a little brown bread, drinks a lot of spiced buttermilk, has cheese, vegetables, dal. I find the buttermilk seems to work well in reducing both hunger and weight.
