Dear Dr. Bernstein,
Happy 83rd Birthday! I hope you have a great time celebrating with family and friends today. I wish we could throw a gigantic worldwide party in your honor and you could see how many lives you’ve touched. What an amazing party that would be!
It’s even more poignant that today is your 83rd, which is the number that you’ve noted is the average “normal” non-diabetic glucose number; the number that we, as diabetics, should strive to achieve.
I want to take this time to thank you and tell you how much you mean to me and to so many other people that you’ve helped around the world. I spent 12 years following the standard advice from my doctors. I had A1c levels in the 7% range and was told I was doing great. But I didn’t feel great. I was clinically depressed and diabetes felt hopeless. I was slogging through every day with questions and doubt. I couldn’t see anything else.
When I finally stumbled upon your book, I was shocked. Could this really help? I’d tried everything, so I might as well try this, too. After following your plan for a few days, I was pleasantly surprised. After a week, I was hooked. Now, two and a half years later, my life is completely changed because of Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution book.
My A1c has been consistently in the high 4% and low 5% range since following the Law of Small Numbers. I’m not depressed any longer, but actually hopeful for a healthy future – despite T1D for for the last 15 years. To put it mildly, your program works – but you already know that. I’m a huge fan and I’ve devoted this new chapter of my life to diabetes advocacy and support.
Thank you for not giving up 40 years ago when you were suffering from debilitating T1D complications. Thank you for using your training in engineering to problem solve, and find a better way for yourself. You were indeed the first ‘biohacker.’ Thank you for never taking ‘no’ for an answer. Thank you for going to Med school as an adult, with a young family. I know it’s not been easy for you. Thank you for all the information that you’ve worked so tirelessly to put into the public. Thank you for being an advocate for all of us.
We wouldn’t be here, with such bright futures ahead of us, without you to have shown us the path and lead the way. Thank you. Happy 83rd Birthday, Dr. B!
Forever 83,
Lisa
