Almost all oral diabetic drugs have short life as body recognises them as foreign matter and its immune system neutralizes its effect on blood sugar which reverts to high and dangerous level. If a patient thinks he is safe for long and does not test his Bsl level he only should accept blame.

Normally maximum two years once he should change his drug and test his BSl repeatedly leaving no chance as narrated in this blog

Thanks for bringing this before forum members.this limitation of the drug.

Very good comments here, thanks rvmasalvad. It is shocking to know that this is a third warning from FDA that this drug (canagliflozin) can cause foot and leg amputation additional to previous different years warnings for an increased risk of acute kidney injuries and bone fractures. I don't see any reason for a doctor would prescribe this drug to his/her patients.

"Almost all oral diabetic drugs have short life as body recognises them as foreign matter and its immune system neutralizes its effect on blood sugar which reverts to high and dangerous level. "

I differ in that. Actually immune system is not involved. But the drugs increase ir and that reduce their effects. Also body adapts to drugs. So more and more drug dosage is required.

Such warnings are ignored. Sglt2 are hot cakes among the anti diabetics since it's proven to reduce cv events. It's now also recommended for pre-diabetics also. Many patients also discontinue due to urinary tract infections.

I am really sad to hear this. To be honest, I have no idea on medications for diabetes except Metformin because I know someone taking them. I hope people are aware of this warning and take it seriously. This medicatoin puts too much stress on the kidneys.

Luckysugar et al

i already said about sglt2 inhibitors. It's criminal negligence to prescribe such medications.

FYI – I already use SGLT2 as first line therapy with Acarbose second for type 2 diabetes. Metformin is my 3rd choice, not my first.

Let jason fung say whatever he likes. I repeat sglt2 drugs are criminal to prescribe. You are endangering the lives of patients. Don't know if you got this warning from fda or not buy posting again.

The whole therapeutic concept to put sugar into our body from one end and inhibiting its absorption and enhancing its excretion from other end is ridiculous. Nobody knows how much sugar will be absorbed or not absorbed and how much will make its way into urine. Better not to put into our body. And interfering with normal body functions is like sote hue kutte ko chedna. If you justify sglt2 then you should justify statins also 🙏🙏. Statins also interfere with the normal functioning of body. No. I'm strongly against acarbose group of drugs and sglt2. As such all the D drugs except metformin and pio/ rosi glitazone are illogical and harmful.

Bhai suramo

I am more scared of insulin spike than sugar spike....

I think as long as we can keep insulin spike to lowest we can escape further diabetic complications..

Kya bade bhaiya ?

Aap bhi doctors ki baaton mein aa gaye ho 🐒.

Both spikes are interrelated. There is no insulin spike without sugar spike except when you give external shots of insulin. Sglt2 are claimed to be reducing insulin spike by increasing glucose excretion but before that sugar spikes as the absorption starts. It's ridiculous to put something inside just to get excreted from the other end exerting its deleterious effects on the way. Sorry bro. I stick to my opinion that prescribing sglt2 is a criminal offense.

On May 16, 2017, the FDA concluded that canagliflozin (generic name) Invokana (brand name) causes an increased risk of leg and foot amputations. The FDA began requiring a Boxed Warning to be added to the canagliflozin drug labels to describe this risk.

Canagliflozin may also increase the chance of having a fracture (broken bone), particularly in the upper arms, wrists, or hands.

@Anup

"Never take a drug that hasn't been on the market for five years"

And here doctors wait for new drug to arrive costlier than the old ones and by five years these new drugs become obsolete 🐒

suramo profile image

@Anup

You may be right partly but most of the time it's failure of the old drugs and partly due to fantasy to give something which their colleagues are not prescribing.

And as soon as patent expires..all studies against the drug starts to surface..

We have to remove the root cause. Until then nothing works. So medicines are going to fail and newer molecules are researched constantly.

Imagine if everybody gets right dietary advices and there are only a few cases of t2d and metabolic syndrome how many hospitals and doctors will lose their jobs. Cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, bariatric surgeons, half dr cum full advisers - the dietitians, general surgeons, orthopedics, plastic surgeons. All other pathywale esp ayurvedic hospitals doing panch karm etc, acupuncturists. There is a long list. Quacks. It's gonna be revolution if our message spreads loud and wide.

What a wonderful idea suramo. Although this imagination seems unrealistic, I would say this revolution could always begin with each of us who need to keep spreading the root cause messages of diabetes to others. Thanks.
