Well, generally we do not use much added sugar on a daily basis as Americans do. A breakfast of idli/ dosa or Puttu / Upma uses no sugar. Appam has added sugar, about 2 tablespoons for around 15 appams which can feed 5-7 people. It is high calorie because of the coconut in it . 2 cups for 3 & 1/2 cup rice. The sugar is used partly to activate the yeast. Lunch and dinner of rice, chapathi, fish, chicken or/ and vegetables have no added sugar. The sugar intake comes from tea/ coffee and biscuits if eaten with these and any sugar added to fruit juice. The general sugar consumption could be approx 3 tablespoons. On special days this goes up due to sweets. I am refraining from all baking and sweet making to reduce sugar consumption. But we consume a lot of carbs.  Quitting sugar in our case must be the same as quitting or reducing carbs drastically.

Isn't it strange that there is no study about Indians and our doctors base everything on US which is as different from India as chalk from cheese.
