Diabetes mellitus causes high blood cholesterol. There are steps everyone can take to improve their cholesterol levels, and help prevent heart disease and a heart attack.
* Quit smoking. This is the single most important change you can make to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Other important lifestyle changes:--
* Eat foods that are naturally low in fat. These include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Use low-fat toppings, sauces, and dressings.
* Look at food labels. Avoid foods that are high in saturated fat.
* Exercise regularly
* Lose weight if you are overweight
Heavy use of alcohol can elevate triglycerides levels.
Triglyceride levels are also reduced by moderate exercise and by consuming omega-3 fatty acids from fish, flax seed oil, and other sources..
Adopt DASH diet (Mediterranean diet). Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet, which includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish, vegetables, poultry, and egg whites. Use monounsaturated oils such as olive, peanut, and canola oils or polyunsaturated oils such as corn, safflower, soy, sunflower, cottonseed, and soybean oils. Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods.
