You have not stated whether your blood sugar level relates to fasting (8 to 12 hour fasting), post-prandial (2 hours after taking food) or random.

Blood sugar > 200 mg/dL indicates that you have diabetes.

Undergo HbA1c test. HbA1c is a lab test that shows the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the previous 3 months. It shows how well you are controlling your diabetes.

An HbA1c of 5.6% or less is normal.

The following are the results when the HbA1c is being used to diagnose diabetes:--

* Normal: Less than 5.7%

* Pre-diabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%

* Diabetes: 6.5% or higher

If you have diabetes, you and your doctor or nurse will discuss the correct range for you. For many people the goal is to keep your level at or below 6.5 - 7%.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA), European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) have agreed that, in the future, HbA1c is to be reported in the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) units. IFCC reporting was introduced in Europe except for the UK in 2003, and the UK has as of 1 June 2009 introduced dual reporting until 1 October 2011.

Conversion between DCCT and IFCC is by the following equation:

IFCC-HbA1c (mmol/mol) = [DCCT-HbA1c (%)--2.15] x 10.929

For eg:-- (7% --2.15) x 10.929 = 4.85 x 10.929 = 53 mmol/mol.

Today I had my A1c tested.It was 6.4.I would like to target 6 but I am wary since I am getting frequent signs of hypo.I think I should be satisfied being 71 years of age.

How to measure the intake. Do we people have to carry balance all the time? In India like US things will not be available with prescribed manner on the cover. Giving advise is easy but putting in practice is difficult. Therefore, the answer should be in a clear and transparant way rather than in a vague manner.

The text below is a "COPY&PASTE STUFF" from my previous replies to some others.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SEEN IT, KINDLY IGNORE THIS.

Diabetes is a fundamental disorder. It is comparable with low voltage in an electric circuit. In both cases all connected subsystems will under-perform and will fail in due course. It will affect SEX life also, if diab is not contained. Diab impairs the glucose (SUGAR) & oxygen supply to ALL CELLS of the patient. You cannot compensate the resultant weakness with liquor, food or medicines.

A DIABETESE PATIENT (also known as A DIABETIC) need NOT starve. PROPER or APPROPRIATE food can be eaten EVEN FULL STOMACH THRICE DAILY! Try to understand diabetes & conquer it.

TAKING MEDICINES ALONE WILL NOT BRING DOWN BLOOD SUGAR ALWAYS. YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR FOOD HABITS & LIFE STYLE ALSO TEMPORARILY TILL CURE.

I was diabetic from 2006; but NOT diabetic from 2009. I studied Diabetes thoroughly, because it was to solve MY problem.

Do you want to see my experience and blood sugar history from 2006 to 2013? Those are reported at: appropedia.org/Diabetes_mel... If you want only MODUS OPERANDI, GO TO appropedia.org/Diabetes_mel...

Please report your future experience (good or bad) here for the benefit of others.

ASK ME MORE>

Here is some info which would help you to modify your food/diet ....

The carbs content of rice, both cooked and uncooked.

Carbs /100gms Carbs/1 cup

Raw white rice Uncooked 79 gms 145-158 gms

Cooked white rice

(Or Steamed) 28 gms 45-53 gms

Raw brown rice 76-77 gms 143-145 gms

Uncooked

Cooked brown rice 23 gms 45 gms

(Or Steamed )

As you can see the difference in carbs between cooked white rice and brown rice is marginal. One cup of cooked rice gives us 28/23 gms of carbs. Even if we take1cup per meal we get nearly 50 gms carbs in this grain alone. Added to this would be carbs from other sources of foods which we consume like milk, vegetables, fruits etc.

I feel you may restrict the rice to 2 cups of cooked rice per day. Add the following in case you are not using them.

/100 gms ............... Carbs (gms) / Proteins (gms) / Fats (gms) / Calories (kcal)

Egg 0.77 /10.90/ 0.17/ 52

Milk nonfat 4.85 / 3.41/ 0.18/ 35

Cream 4.30 /2.96/ 11.50 /130

Tofu soya 1.25/ 5.1 /2.7/ 62

Almonds 19.74/ 21.26/ 50.64/ 578

Cheese ( Amul for ref) 1.6 /20.0/ 44.0 /320

Olive oil 0/ 0 /100 /42

Mushroom 3.28 /3.09/ 0.34/ 22
