Alcohol adds useless calories to your system which one have to account for.It spikes blood sugar immediately and drops suddenly after sometime.Your efforts in diabetes management go for a toss. Also, all diabetics are prone to peripheral neuropathy in the long run and alcohol aggravates the problem. If one is accustomed to snacking while sipping, that does not help your meal plan either.

It seems there is no clear conclusion regarding the consumtion of alcohol by diabetics but ADA allows two small pegs per day...the best is to avoid using regularly except on a rare occasion like new year, etc.

Here are some other ways that alcohol can affect diabetes:--

* While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar level -- sometimes causing it to drop into

dangerous levels.

* Beer and sweet wine contain carbohydrates and may raise blood sugar.

* Alcohol stimulates your appetite, which can cause you to overeat and may affect your blood sugar control.

* Alcohol can interfere with the positive effects of oral diabetes medicines or insulin.

* Alcohol may increase triglyceride levels.

* Alcohol may increase blood pressure.

* Alcohol can cause flushing, nausea, increased heart rate, and slurred speech.
