Why are you taking cholesterol lowering medication?

Cholesterol lowering medication has side effects, you need to have a look at it.

In India there is enough sun light for Vit D?

It depends on your blood test report.Your doctor will decide any medication requirements.Daily exposure to sunlight for about half an hour a day will normally meet your daily requirement of Vit D.Your Doctor and yourself only can build a rationale for any medication.Any drug is a foreign body and you should be very careful.

This is in the UK news paper!

"They are typically taken by the health conscious with the hope of adding years to life.

But a study found taking supplements has little effect and only nutrients found in foods can lower your chances of death.

In fact, some supplements - such as calcium and vitamin D - were actually associated with a higher risk of cancer.

"

Experts suggest the findings add to growing evidence that supplements cannot be used as ‘insurance’, and that diet and lifestyle are key to health.

I agree with you sandybrown. We have so much sunlight in India and it seems a pity not to use it and resort to tablets for Vitamin D.

Please read this article:

Man, 54, develops kidney failure after taking too many vitamin D drops as doctors reveal he was having 12 TIMES the recommended amount every day

The man had been prescribed a high dose by a naturopath in his home, Canada

He took the dose for over two years, but a two week holiday made him ill

Exposure to the sun creates more vitamin D - and he sunbathed for 8h a day

His kidneys struggled to function and are still not recovered a year later.

Dosage of any medication in any country has to be checked!!!

Please note that we are not medically trained. If your doctor has prescribed some medications for you, there must be some reason. If you have some concerns, you should discuss with your Doctor.

You do not change/stop your prescribed medications based on some newspaper reports. Everyone's conditions are not the same.

The person who suffered damage to the kidney had consumed 12 times maximum allowed dose of vitamin D for a long period. And he did not even consult a proper Doctor. Therefore, you should not relate everything to yourself.

While it is good to meet all vitamins requirements through diet and lifestyle, sometimes one may need to take supplements depending on one's conditions. As such, normal dose of vitamin D is considered safe for most people. Many times when vitamin D deficiency is severe, Doctors do prescribe high dose of vitamin D for a short period followed by normal maintenance dose for longer time. It all depends on individual conditions.

A healthy discussion is very important!, The problems is vitamin supplement are available over the counter.! understanding the dosage is a problem for many people.

Few years ago a lay was asking question on heart attack blood test.

This test was (troponin tests) new at that time, I gave response with a copy of an article on ( troponin tests), blood test for woman who had heart attack. This lady took a copy of the article to A&E and asked for blood tests, they found out she had heart attack and received statement!

Yes, we have to be careful about not jumping to news paper articles.

In UK even doctors do give high dosage of medication, again it was in the news paper under health section.

" Don't take more than 100 micrograms of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful. This applies to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly, and children aged 11 to 17 years.

" This is from UK.

"What is the Governments advice?

The Government in the UK has issued public health advice stating that everyone should consider taking Vitamin D supplements in Autumn and Winter. The dosage recommended is 10 micrograms (400iu) of Vitamin D per day. There is concern that this may not be achievable through diet and sunlight alone and people should therefore get their Vitamin D intake from supplements."

Please understand the dosage.
